The Maquoketa Valley Wildcats will have a soloist and two team entries at the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team State Championships in Des Moines, Nov. 30.
Maquoketa Valley will open the day in the Class II Solo competition at 11:37 a.m. when Maddyx Kemp performs in Hy-Vee Hall B.
They will head over to Wells Fargo Arena to compete in Class II Hip Hop at 3:07 p.m., against teams from West Fork, Southeast Warren, Lynnville-Sully, Logan-Magnolia, North Butler, North Cedar, AGWSR, Westwood, Mason City Newman, Baxter and Tri-Center.
At 6:30 p.m., MV will compete in Class III Pom against Westwood, South O’Brien, Wapello, North Cedar, Riverside, Tri-Center, Mason City Newman, Logan-Magnolia, AGWSR and Woodbury Central.
Maquoketa Valley is coached by Jennifer Teymer, who is looking forward to her kids competing after a hectic rehearsal period.
“We had a rough few weeks with rehearsals and I wasn’t sure it was going to come together. Illnesses, busy schedules and girls being out of town. But things have improved and I’m excited for the team to strut their stuff. They have worked extremely hard at practicing on their own and together. This is a small-town team with nine busy schedules. Most people don’t realize the talent and dedication it takes to be a strong dance team. I don’t think this group gets half the credit they deserve.”
She commented on her girls’ routines.
“Maddyx Kemp is dancing a creepy number called “The Devil’s Playground.” For our hip hop, our theme this year was ‘Jock Jams.’ It’s very 90s hip hop and I’m so excited. I graduated in 1998. I was a cheerleader and remember in 1997 when Jock Jams was released. It made basketball games so much fun and that was the vibe I was going for with this routine. Our theme for pom is the opening number of Grease 2, ‘Back to School.’ We have custom pink poodle skirts and a very early 60s look. It is very high energy and seems to be a team favorite.”
Teymer said her team will perform their state routines Monday, Dec. 5 at halftime of both basketball games. In addition, the team has several season performances scheduled.
