Two of the three Edgewood-Colesburg wrestlers competed at the 17-team John Beyer Invitational at Midland, Jan. 21.
Peyton Gaul placed fifth at 126. After beginning with a bye, he fell to Pryce Schueller, of Maquoketa (3:31), to go to the consolation bracket. In the first round, he built a tech fall over Landon Thompson of North Linn (15-0, 3:32), then pinned West Branch’s Maddux Ruchton (1:06). In the fifth place match he pinned Dubuque Senior’s Zion Deah (3:10).
Marcus Gaul began with two byes at 106 but dropped the next two matches, to Jaxsen Vestal, of Southeast Polk, by decision (10-4) and to Codder Malcolm, of Wapello (6-1).
Southeast Polk claimed the team title with 156, followed by West Branch 152, Monticello 144, MFL MarMac 131, Dubuque Senior 112.5, Wapello 107, Durant 97.5, Maquoketa Valley 92.5, Midland 90.5, North Linn 86, Maquoketa 68.5, Bellevue 58, Northeast 58, Clayton Ridge 51, Central Elkader 34, Ed-Co 25.5 and Springville five.
“We set a goal of finishing each wrestler in the top three, but we fell short of that, losing a couple of matches due to little mistakes that we need to clean up,” said coach Rob Anderson. “As we move forward closer to post-season, we need to focus on doing things right and not be hesitant to hit our moves.
“I was happy for Peyton because, with this tourney, he joined the 100-win club.”
