Kennedy Klostermann set a school record for most made three-pointers in a game as the West Delaware girls’ basketball team defeated Jesup at home, 64-47, Jan. 16. The next night the Hawks lost at Waverly-Shell Rock, 44-33. West Delaware ended its week with Senior Night, Jan. 20, falling to Mount Vernon, 47-42.
Against Jesup, Klostermann hit six three-pointers in the first half. The Hawks trailed 21-16 after a quarter and 33-32 at halftime. West Delaware took control in the third, outscoring Jesup 24-2 and led 56-35 after three.
“We made a subtle adjustment on defense in that third quarter,” coach Brad Wubbena said. “That was key because we were able to keep them off the free throw line.”
Klostermann added two more three-pointers in the second half, breaking the record of seven previously held by Kasey Palmer in 2014. Klostermann went 8-for-12 and led the Hawks with 24 points. Brooke Krogmann added 18 and Susie Funke 12.
Other statistics for the Hawks were: points — Josie McMahon and Keara Emerson two; rebounds — Funke and Krogmann eight, Klostermann four, Emerson three, McMahon two and Claire Ridenour one; assists — Funke six, McMahon four and Ridenour one; steals — McMahon three, Funke, Klostermann and Krogmann two, Ridenour and Emerson one.
The next night, playing their fourth game in five days, West Delaware trailed WSR 15-10 after a quarter and 25-15 at half. WSR led 39-24 after three.
“A stretch of four games against good competition in five days is tough, both mentally and physically,” said Wubbena. “The girls came out and gave a good effort.”
Krogmann led with 16 points, followed by Norah Peyton with nine and Funke and McMahon four.
Other statistics for the Hawks were: rebounds — Peyton eight, Krogmann six, Funke, Klostermann, Ridenour and McMahon three, Alivia Schulte one; assists — Klostermann, Ridenour, Krogmann and McMahon two, Peyton one; steals — Peyton two and Klostermann one.
On Senior Night in Seedorff Gymnasium, the Hawks honored Klostermann, Ridenour, Schulte and Emerson, but were unable to pull off the win.
Tied 13-13 after a quarter, Mount Vernon led 26-22 at halftime and 37-32 after three quarters.
Klostermann led with 16 points, including four three-pointers. The Hawks were down by 10 in the fourth, cutting the Mustangs’ lead to five.
“The kids fought hard through some adversity,” Wubbena said. “They never hung their heads and never quit.”
