West Delaware’s girls’ wrestling team tallied a pair of wins in a home double dual, Jan. 12.
“The girls showed a lot of grit in both of those meets. We were behind in a few matches and came from behind to get pins. The gym was packed and our crowd was crazy. It was so much fun,” coach Dale Meyer said.
The Hawks earned a 36-27 victory over Solon.
Four Hawks won by fall. Addison Welcher pinned Abby Gregory in 3:37. Kylee Shoop defeated Eleanor Gnida in 3:19. Hannah Cantwell pinned Alexis Anderson in 2:27. Samantha Murray defeated Adlie Miller in 1:25.
Anna O’Rear and Lexi Bunting received forfeit wins.
Both teams forfeited at 100, 105 and 235.
The Hawks forfeited at 110.
Abigail O’Rear, Addison Burger, Livvy Petlon and Ella Goedken all lost by fall.
In an exhibition match, Kendra Lux pinned Solon’s Bailey Madura in 4:47.
West Delaware earned a 39-27 win over Benton Community with five Hawks pinning their opponents.
Cantwell defeated Carlie Simons in 1:35. Petlon earned a win by fall over Emma Fennern in 3:40. Goedken downed Laynee Armstrong in 55 seconds. Welcher beat Bailey Davis in 4:42. Shoop pinned Kaitlyn Bonewitz in 1:30.
Anna O’Rear earned a 4-0 decision over Alexis Northcutt.
Murray received a forfeit win.
Both teams forfeited at 100 and 105.
Burger battled but lost in a 4-3 decision to Madilyn Colburn.
Bunting and Abigail O’Rear lost by fall.
Benton earned forfeit wins at 110 and 235.
This week the Hawks will host Independence which is always a big dual for West Delaware.
“I’m excited for the girls to be part of the West Delaware/Independence rivalry. Regardless of the outcome, there are always great matches with Indee,” Meyer said.
The Hawks have two more weeks of wrestling in preparation for the state-qualifying tournament, Friday, Jan. 27 at Luther College in Decorah.
“We have come so far from our first competition. They continue to work hard in practice,” Meyer said. “The biggest difference in this meet was the way we matched the opponents’ physicality. We have a lot of things that we’ll continue to work on to prepare for the state-qualifying meet.”
