The season may have gotten started late, but the West Delaware baseball team was ready to go, finishing 3-1 in their opening week, splitting a doubleheader with Solon and sweeping Independence.

All four games were played at home.

In their opener against Solon June 15, Luke Kehrli’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh gave the Hawks the 4-3 win.

West Delaware led 3-0 after two innings before Solon scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie.

The Hawks made the most of three hits. Will Ward hit a homer and had two RBIs, while Jared Voss singled for the Hawks.

Kyle Cole struck out four Spartans and allowed one hit in four innings on the mound.

In the second game, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the fifth before Solon scored three runs in the top of the seventh to earn the split. Cole had the RBI for the Hawks.

The Hawks trailed early in both games, June 18, against Independence. In the opener, the visitors put up three runs in the first courtesy of a solo home run by Kaine Millard and an RBI single by Korver Hupke.

The Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the first. With one out, Isaac Fettkether was hit by a pitch and moved to third on an error. Voss also reached first on the error. A single by Cole scored Fettkether before Voss scored on another Mustang error.

West Delaware took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Kehrli started the inning with a walk. With one out, Lukas Meyer walked to put runners first and second. A balk, a hit batter and a walk by Fettkether plated the Hawk runs.

Independence tied the score in the fifth when a single by Millard past a drawn-in Hawk infield scored Kaleb Lamphier, who reached first when he was hit by a pitch from Hawk pitcher Logan Woellert.

The Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cole drew a walk to lead off the inning. Ward’s bunt down third base resulted in a throwing error, with Cole scoring all the way from first base. After a Kehrli single, Ward scored on Meyer’s single and a double by Woellert plated Kehrli, giving the Hawks a 7-4 lead.

A solo homer by Marcus Beatty cut the Hawk lead to 7-5 before a Voss home run in the bottom of the frame made it 8-5.

Woellert got the win on the mound, going the distance. He allowed five hits and struck out four.

Independence took an 8-1 lead after two innings in the nightcap before the Hawks scored six runs in the fifth inning to trail 8-7. West Delaware scored three more in the sixth to win 10-8.

Voss led the Hawks’ five-hit attack with two hits, a double and two RBIs.
