Eve Wedewer looks for a pitch to drive during the 2019 state tournament.

With seven returning starters from last year’s team that finished fourth in the Class 4A State tournament, the West Delaware softball team could very well make a return trip to Fort Dodge later this summer.

And while the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the start of the season for Iowa teams, one thing is certain. The Hawks are loaded with talent and ready to go. They begin the season ranked ninth in Class 4A in the IGHSAU pre-season poll

Head coach Tiffany Rave has two all-staters returning from last year’s 31-12 squad. Junior Eve Wedewer was first-team all-state, batting .456 from the lead off spot. Wedewer scored 40 runs and had 31 RBIs for the Hawks.

Senior Macey Kleitsch earned third-team all-state honors last year. Kleitsch hit .354 with 24 RBIs. On the mound, Kleitsch was 15-5 with a 1.96 ERA.

Junior outfielder Eva Winn hit .346 a year ago, while second baseman Heather Heims, also a junior, hit .338 and drove in 33 RBIs.

Third baseman Ella Koloc batted .355 last season and has 19 stolen bases. Catcher Leah Wegmann (.296 batting average) and Kayla Felton also return for the Hawks.

Other returning letterwinners include pitcher and designated hitter Kinley Kolbet, who batted .273 a year ago, as well as utility player Alissa Holtz and catcher/left fielder Mia Peyton.

Assisting Rave this year will be Ashley Heims, Maleah Georgen, Emily Klostermann and Anna Klaus.
