Edgewood-Colesburg has completed its 2021 regular-season golf schedule, and the Vikings are poised for a strong tournament run after winning duals with East Buchanan and Postville, before dropping their first match of the season to Lisbon.

“We finished the regular season at 8-1 this year, losing to Lisbon on the last meet of the season,” said coach Alex Hanna. “Our girls have improved every week and have been shooting lower and lower each week.”

At Winthrop, April 26, Ed-Co defeated East Buchanan 197-247, as Maddy Streicher fired a crisp 38 to lead the way. Kenzie Barnhart was at 49, Kirstyn Payne 54, Hailey Rausch 56, Alex Schmitz 58 and Abbie Sullivan 60. EB’s Ally Joyce led the Bucs with a round of 53.

In a quick turnaround, the Vikings hosted Postville, at Lone Pine in Colesburg, April 27 and fired a team score of 208 as the Pirates finished at 253.

Streicher was again in the groove, shooting a 39. Schmitz and Brianna VanGroll were next in line at 55, Payne 59, Barnhart 60 and MiKayla Thien 63.

Lisbon shot a team score of 193, at Lone Pine, April 30 to hand the Vikings their first loss of the campaign. Streicher led the way at 39, Schmitz finished at 51, Payne and VanGroll 56, Sullivan 57 and Rausch 59. Kaylie Kelchen led a consistent Lisbon team at 46.

“Maddy was meet medalist with a 39 and all eight of our girls were under 60, which I can’t remember a time where that happened since I have been coaching,” said Hanna. “While we hate to see an undefeated season slip through the cracks, we know that losing to a 3A team makes it easier to deal with.”

Hanna and the Vikings have developed some consistent depth moving ahead.

“I have seven girls who can shoot around 50, which is unbelievable for our level of golf. While this is nice to see, we will have to make some tough choices in the next week about who to take to the postseason among our eight golfers,” Hanna explained. “They have all earned their spots and it’s not something I am looking forward to as a coach. I wish I could take all eight of them because they are great girls and great teammates.

“We are excited to keep playing our best headed to the conference meet and the regional tournament. While we still have some work to do, our girls will be up for the challenge.”
