Dawson Bergan works for an advantage over Kile Bucknell, of Jesup.

Dawson Bergan will wear the Edgewood-Colesburg singlet at the Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament this week in Des Moines.

Bergan (41-5) took second in the 113 weight class at the Class 1A District 3 competition, Feb. 13, at Denver. He began with a 4-0 decision over Jesup’s Kile Bucknell. In the first place match he dropped a major decision (12-4) to Wapsie Valley’s Dawson Schmitt.

Coach Randall Anderson added, “We were looking at having a good day and punching our ticket to State. I told Dawson not to look past his first match, to go one at a time if he wanted a shot at Des Moines. He wrestled smart in both matches and was able to achieve the goal of the day. Now we have to set new goals for next week.”

With just one wrestler competing, the Vikings were not really in the team race, but Bergan’s 12 points did put them 12th among the 15 teams entered. Beckman won with 86 points, followed by Denver 77, East Buchanan 71, MFL MarMac 62, North Linn 59, Starmont 44, Cascade 42, Sumner-Fredericksburg and Wapsie Valley 37, Jesup 22, Postville 14, Ed-Co 12, Elkader and Clayton Ridge 10, Maquoketa Valley 0.
