Long days and pleasant nights to you, friends. My name is Daniel Charland and I am a new reporter/photographer with the Cascade Pioneer, Dyersville Commercial and Manchester Press. The year 2020 has been an interesting time to graduate college and enter the workforce, and I’m grateful for the chance to put my writing skills to use. I graduated from Loras College this past spring with a double-major in English literature and creative writing, and have a great love for stories of all kinds.
I first discovered my love of newspaper writing during my sophomore year of college when I began writing for the school newspaper, contributing a wide variety of content. I was then offered the opportunity to write for The Witness, the newspaper of the Dubuque Archdiocese, greatly boosting my professional experience. Now I am honored to be able to continue down this path with a full-time position with Woodward Communications, Inc.
I’ve always been a lover of the arts, from participating in performing arts like choir and musical theater, to visual ones like drawing and writing. I’m a lover of fantasy literature — such as Lord of the Rings and the Chronical of Narnia — as well as board and computer games. I’m a recent member of the Dubuque Barbershop Chorus and have served my parishes as a catechist for the last several years.
I was born in Maryland, but have lived in Dubuque since I was seven, and am excited to familiarize myself with the other communities in the Eastern Iowa region. What better way to learn about the people, places and events of an area than to be the one reporting on them? I look forward to getting to know members of the community and become a part of it myself.
