No injuries reported after fire in Manchester industrial building

No injuries were reported following a small fire Nov. 18 at an industrial building in southwest Manchester.

Firefighters responded at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 to a report of smoke in the Royal Oaks Development Corp. building on Commercial Court, said Manchester Fire Chief Mike Ryan. The building presently has two occupants, Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative and Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Responders arrived to find smoke throughout the building and located a small fire in a portion of the facility occupied by Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative. The cooperative uses the space to house a service truck and equipment.

Ryan said firefighters were on scene for about 1.5 hours.

The area in which the fire started sustained smoke damage, as did some unoccupied rooms. The DNR office had minimal smoke damage — just enough that workers there smelled smoke and called the fire department.

Ryan said the official cause of the fire will be undetermined but that officials have a good idea of what likely happened.

“Chances are good it was a spark from a heater, so that’s as far as we’re going to go with it,” he said.
