During Learning and Leadership, STEM Enrichment class faculty and students made presentations. Three of the four semester-long science technology engineering and mathematics classes offered to eighth-grade students were represented.
Ready, set, drone captivated the board with a drone demonstration, as teacher Ryan King offered support and talked the audience through drone operation and other information relevant to the class curriculum. From the students’ perspective, becoming a drone pilot feels a lot like a video game.
Ioponics instructor Leah Willie was the second to present. She guides her students through class components such as essential aquaponics knowledge, sustainable ag, the water cycle, the fish life cycle, food chains and photosynthesis and cellular respiration. There are five Koi fish in her classroom, named Hank and friends, as well as five students. Each student takes a day of the week to feed the fish, check water levels and assess the well-being of the plants, gaining hands-on experience in the process. Willie empowers her students by allowing them to build the system, do the research and present it to her.
Finch Robots was the third class represented by teacher Doug Engel with his students Cooper Harms and Miles Bockenstedt. With 15 robots and 15 students, Engel’s love of competition guided him towards creating the WDMS Finch Olympics, obstacle courses and racetracks to keep his students engaged. “The most fun was giving these things to the kids and watching them go crazy.”
Superintendent Dr. Kristen Rickey shared her appreciation for the STEM classes, especially the introduction they offer students to ag tech and sustainable farming.
