Manchester man wants murder trial moved
A Manchester man accused of murder in the death of an Iowa woman almost 40 years ago wants his trial moved.
Police arrested Jerry Burns, 65, Dec. 19, exactly 39 years after the death of 18-year-old Michelle Martinko. Her body was discovered Dec. 20, 1979, in her family’s car at a mall in Cedar Rapids. Martinko had been stabbed in the face and chest.
Burns’ attorney said in a Nov. 25 court filing that pretrial publicity jeopardized his client’s opportunity to receive a fair trial. The trial is slated for Feb. 10 in Linn County.
