Sam Wall hits one of her five three-pointers during Maquoketa Valley’s 63-24 win over Ed-Co at Edgewood, Jan. 11.

Maquoketa Valley’s Sam Wall was recognized by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s last week when she was named a first-team all-state selection in Class 2A. The nod came in recognition of Wall’s senior campaign, where she finished fourth among 2A players in both points scored (477) and points-per-game (20.7).

The award is Wall’s second all-state distinction from the IGCA after she earned second-team honors as a junior. She was also named first-team all-state by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

In addition to her overall scoring numbers, Wall led the Wildcats (20-3) in three-pointers made (54), three-point shooting percentage (38.0) and made 117 of 139 free-throw attempts (84.2). She was second for the team in assists (63) and steals (54) and fourth in rebounds (85).

Wall, who became MV’s all-time leading scorer as a junior, finished her high school career with 1,488 total points, 195 three-point goals, 289 assists, 223 rebounds and a team record of 72-20. When the IGHSAU’s all-time list is updated, Wall will be listed as a top-50 career three-point shooter and a top-150 overall scorer alongside players of all classes.

“It’s not surprising at all,” MV head coach Scot Moenck said of the nod. “She’s one of the best players in the state of Iowa, and she’s earned that with her hard work. She dedicated herself for four years, she put goals in front of her that were hard to achieve, and she did it. The only goal she didn’t reach was bringing her and her teammates to the state tournament. She’s a very unselfish kid and she wanted that more than anything for her team.”

Following the completion of her senior year of high school, Wall will continue her educational and basketball pursuits at Southwest Minnesota State on a full-ride athletic scholarship.

“It’s a place where she can go and play right away,” Moenck said of the decision. “She had bigger schools that were interested in her, but she fell in love with that place. It was what was best both academically and athletically, for her. We know she’ll go on to do great things.”
