Maquoketa Valley started last week strong with a 2-1 record at home Jan. 3, defeating Central Elkader, and Edgewood-Colesburg, but falling to Alburnett.
“Overall, I was very happy with how the guys came out and performed,” coach Tim Andrews said. “To win two out of three dual meets is always a good thing. I’m very pleased with the energy of the group and look forward to finishing the year strong.”
MV and Ed-Co fought to a 36-36 tie, with the Wildcats earning an additional point to win by criteria, 37-36.
Tim Harmon (152), James LeGassick (170), Michael Feldmann (285) and Parker Sternhagen (132) all pinned their opponents. Sternhagen had the fastest win with a fall in 21 seconds. Carter Kruse (182) and Anthony March (106) received forfeit wins.
The Wildcats defeated Central Elkader, 54-6.
Sternhagen, Devin Smith (195) and Feldmann all earned wins by fall. Feldmann’s was the quickest in 45 seconds. James DeMoss (138), Harmon, LeGassick, Kruse, March and Michael Schaul (126) all earned forfeit wins.
Alburnett pulled away with a 54-18 win.
All three Wildcat wins were by fall: Sternhagen (1:07), Harmon (36 seconds) and Kruse (28 seconds).
Jan. 5, MV hosted its own dual tournament and earned a 2-3 record on the day. The Wildcats recorded wins over Midland and Starmont. Beckman, Wilton and Center Point-Urbana defeated MV.
“Overall, I like the direction the team is heading,” Andrews said. “We are starting to get guys healthy and back in the lineup. We as coaches are definitely seeing improvement across the board. We are looking forward to a busy week of competitions in the week ahead.”
MV defeated Midland, 42-33.
Tim Harmon earned a win by fall over Kaleb Westphal, of Midland, in 26 seconds. DeMoss, LeGassick, Kruse, Smith, March and Schaul all received forfeits.
Against Starmont, MV recorded a 37-30 victory.
Canyon Richardson (120) pinned Kari German, of Starmont, in 47 seconds. DeMoss pinned Garrison Hogue in 1:47. Sternhagen went the distance to earn a 13-2 major decision over Henry Hayes. Harmon recorded a 6-0 decision over Eli Elledge. Kruse, Smith and March all received forfeits.
Wilton battled to a 42-30 win over Maquoketa Valley.
Sternhagen (33 seconds), Kruse (2:25), Legassick (1:06) and Schaul (3:47) all earned wins by fall. Harmon recorded a forfeit win.
Center Point-Urbana recorded a 45-30 win over the Wildcats.
LeGassick earned a win by fall in 1:09. Smith pinned his opponent in 1:58 and Sternhagen recorded a fall in 1:11. Kruse and March received forfeits.
Beckman defeated MV 68-9. Harmon pinned Ty Fangman, of Beckman, in 2:53 and Schaul earned a 4-2 decision over Conner Grover.
