A split at Independence and an extra-inning win at Lisbon gave the West Delaware baseball team some much needed momentum after dropping its first five games last week.

The Hawks led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh at Lisbon June 14 before the Lions rallied to tie the game. The Hawks responded by exploding for five runs in the top of the eighth to nab the 9-4 win.

West Delaware banged out 11 hits in the game, with Luke Kehrli going 3-for-4 and Logan Woellert 2-for-5. Sam Loecke and Isaac Fettkether had a pair of RBIs for the Hawks, while Kyle Cole and Loecke tripled.

Lukas Meyer threw the final 2/3 of an inning to earn the win.

West Delaware won the nightcap at Independence, 7-3, June 13. Cole was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and earned the win, throwing 5 2/3 innings. He allowed three Independence hits and struck out six.

The Hawks lost the opener 6-5 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. Cole and Meyer had two hits, Ben Ridenour a double and a pair of RBIs, while Kehrli doubled and had an RBI.

Fettkether took the loss, throwing the final 1 2/3 innings. He allowed only one hit and one unearned run and stuck out three. Conner Funk started on the mound, throwing five innings. He allowed 11 hits, five runs and struck out three.

June 11 saw the Hawks travel to Central DeWitt, where they lost a doubleheader 4-1 and 6-1.

In the opener, the Hawks led 1-0 after an inning before Central DeWitt scored two runs in the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Hawks managed only four hits, with Woellert going 2-for-4 with a double. Ridenour’s sacrifice fly accounted for the lone Hawk run.

Woellert was the losing pitcher. He went the distance, scattering seven hits.

In game two, the Hawks managed a single run in the third and lost 6-1. Loecke and Funk went 2-for-3, while Kehrli added a single in the Hawks five-hit effort.

Nick Casey was the losing pitcher. He threw a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out seven.

West Delaware began its week June 10 at Solon, losing the first game, 7-6, and game two, 6-2.

The Hawks trailed 7-0 after four innings before scoring three runs in the fifth and adding three more in the sixth. In the seventh, Casey and Kehrli each singled to lead off the inning, but the Hawks went down in order to end the threat.

WD had seven hits, with Casey and Woellert going 3-for-4. Casey doubled twice and Woellert added a pair of RBIs.

Meyer allowed seven hits and only four earned runs, but suffered the loss.

The second game saw Solon jump out to a 3-0 lead after an inning. The host team led 6-0 after five before the Hawks scored a pair of runs in the sixth. Woellert was 2-for-4. The Hawks ended the game with five hits.

Chad Bishop threw a complete game, allowing 10 hits and only three earned runs while striking out three.

West Delaware is now 8-10-1 on the season.
