The West Delaware girls bowling team secured a 3-0 start to their dual meet season with a Dec. 14 road win over Vinton-Shellsburg at Barry’s Lanes.

Juniors Lorna Niedert rolled a 168 and improved with a 188 for a 356 two-game series, leading the Hawks to a 2,147-2,062 victory. Next came Hannah Axline 339 (152, 187), then Lacey Cole 253, Kaley Pettlon 269, Kaliah Griffin 282 and Kyleigh Marsden 251.

“We didn’t have the night at Vinton that we were looking for after a very good week of practice. One of those nights that you hope that if they are going to happen, happen in December and not February,” head coach Ken Boesenberg said of the meet. “We bowled well below our Baker season average with a 647.”

There were some highlights, however.

“Sophomore Kennedy Rees joined the varsity for the Baker series against Vinton and did a fine job for her first varsity experience. I look for her and the rest of our young and inexperienced junior varsity squad to continue to make progress as the season moves along,” Boesenberg said.

The even younger and more inexperienced Vikings (0-2) were led by sophomore Christina Harrelson, who rolled 155 and 158 for a 313 series.

“We will get back to some basics this week before our meet in Decorah this Friday night. The Vikings enter the meet with an unblemished record of 3-0, so it will be a battle of unbeatens,” Boesenberg said of the final challenge awaiting the Hawks as they prepare for winter break.
