West Delaware’s 4x800-meter relay team was seeded 21st out of 24 teams heading into the IHSAA Class 3A State Finals in Des Moines, May 16. After the race was run, the Hawks had improved to 13th overall after placing third in their section with a time of 8:20.65.

It’s hard to ask for much more from a quartet that is set to return each member for next season. Current junior Nathan Goranson led off the effort, with the stick going to sophomores Blake Smith and Logan Woellert, respectively, before junior Isaiah Rich brought it home.

“The guys kept getting better and they got another PR at state. All four guys return next spring, so we are excited to see what they can accomplish next year,” West Delaware head coach Doug Winkowitsch said of the effort.

The group took third in the first of two sections, falling behind Humboldt (8:15.26) and Benton Community (8:15.96) while edging out Assumption (8:21.46), Rock Valley (8:22.58), Waverly-Shell Rock (8:23.19), North Polk (8:26.82), Gilbert (8:28.85), Central DeWitt (8:30.6), Glenwood (8:35.41) and Charles City (8:42.65). Anamosa also participated in that heat but was disqualified.

The top-ten teams all came out of section two, however, with Sergeant Bluff-Luton winning the title in 7:58.68 over runner-up Pella (8:03.68) and Clear Creek Amana (8:05.58). Also, scoring points were squads from Atlantic (8:06.88), Grinnell (8:08.06), Center Point Urbana (8:10.71), Mount Pleasant (8:11.40) and Spencer (8:11.61).
