Backbone State Park is an incredible area resource. On an infrequent visit last summer, I thought of a saying that my dad had, “That smells like the south-end of a gut wagon going north.” I’m referring to a restroom in the park. I think it was in the Flats area of the park. The state should be able to do better. Backbone is a premier state park for Iowa.
On a grander scale, it needs a nature center in the former hatchery area. That center should include a modest sized trout pond with some monster trout. The park is wonderful but presently doesn’t have a key attraction. Growing up in the Dubuque area, I can remember how family trips to the park and the hatchery riveted my attention. The park, wonderful as it is, can use an enhancement or two.
