Visitors to the Freedom is Not Free Veterans’ Memorial at Baum Park will notice a big change come spring 2019.
Donor names will be etched into pavers and placed in cement along the walkway leading up to the memorial.
Plans for recognizing donors with the pavers was always a part of the plan for the memorial, but the location of the paver placement changed from the initial plan.
Committee member Jack Klaus explained the need for the change. “We put a paver down with a Diamond 10 finish that isn’t slippery. The finish we selected doesn’t take etching as well as some other finishes. The new pavers will have a different finish that takes etching a whole lot better.”
Dr. John Tyrrell said the pavers will be set as soon as weather allows in the spring.
“The first group to go in will have everyone who had a paver at the time the memorial was put in. There is plenty of room for others, just like there is room for names of veterans on the board.”
Tyrrell added that pavers will be added periodically after the initial group has been set. “The goal is that all the pavers spoken for so far are in place by next Veterans Day.”
Those wishing to purchase a paver for a suggested contribution of $100 may contact the Manchester city office at (563) 927-3636 or Tyrrell at (563) 608-2227.
