Authorities: Boy on bike injured in collision

An 8-year-old Manchester boy was taken by ambulance to Regional Medical Center after he was struck by a truck while riding his bike.

According to an accident report from the Manchester Police Department, authorities responded to an accident at the intersection of Main Street and Franklin Street at approximately 9 p.m. Aug. 2. Upon arrival, an officer noted he witnessed a bike partially underneath a truck in the westbound lane. A child, who was not identified by name in the report, was several feet in front of the bicycle and appeared to have serious/incapacitating injuries.

Jay Joseph Schmitt, 61, of Manchester, was the driver of the truck. Schmitt told officers he had a green light when the bicycle entered the roadway. Schmitt said he slammed on the brakes but it all happened very quickly. Two witnesses to the accident state Schmitt did have a green light, documents state.

Schmitt has not been charged as of Aug. 12.
