Hawk boys pound Vinton, 72-46
by Alison Nesteby
|
The long Christmas break treated the West Delaware boys basketball team well, as they came out to pound the Vikings of Vinton 72-46 on Friday night in Manchester.
The Vikings fell behind in the very beginning of the game, and the Hawks gave them no opportunity to catch up.
The Hawks came out strong right away and put up 14 points in the first quarter, as opposed to the Vikings 8.
West Delaware increased their lead to 13 at the half after scoring 20 in the second quarter. Vinton Shellsburg went to the locker room trailing 34-21 to a determined Hawks team.
Just as in the first half, it was all the Hawks in the second. The boys put up 23 points in the third quarter went into the final quarter with a 57-30 lead.

The Hawks held a 66-32 lead at one point in the fourth quarter before letting the Vikings go on a little streak. They Hawks were actually outscored 15-16 in the fourth, but had already pulled plenty far ahead of the Vikings at that point. The 26 point advantage has been the most in a Hawk win yet this season.
Three different Hawks put up double digits on the scoreboard on Friday. BJ Hermsen recorded 24 points, Ben Lechtenberg put up 15, and Chris Crawford added 13. Crawford also recorded 13 assists in the contest. Lechtenberg pulled down eight rebounds as well.
The win over Vinton improved the Hawks’ record to 5-4 on the year and 4-2 in the conference.
West Delaware will host the Blazers of Beckman on Tuesday in Manchester, and will travel to Marion on Friday.

Hawks ride team depth to Jerry Eckenrod title
by Ken Boesenberg |
With 14 teams in the field at the Bobcat Jerry Eckenrod Invitational wrestling tournament hosted by Benton Com-munity Saturday one knew the competition would be very, very good.
There were some 40 ranked wrestlers in the field which provided spectators with some excellent entertainment.
In the end it was the depth of the West Delaware Hawk team that proved to be more than the other 13 teams could handle. The Hawks crowned just one champion but racked up 164.5 team points to outdistance Fort Dodge by 11 points to claim the team title.
West Delaware sent five wrestlers to the finals with a very successful semi-final round. That semi-final round was what propelled the Hawks to the team title.
Advancing to the finals were Nick Ketchum (145-pounds), Adam Rave (152-pounds), Tyler Manternach (171-pounds), Carl Broghammer (189-pound), and Nick Trenkamp (285-pounds).

The Hawks Tyler Manternach has his op-ponent, Tyler Winger-son of Fort Dodge, well in hand during their semi-final match at 171-pounds. |
The Hawks also picked up some valuable team points on the back side with placement match wins from PC McEnany (103) by fall for seventh place and by Nathan Vaske (125) also by fall for third place.
In big tournaments such as this one any point that can be scored, no matter where it comes from can be huge at the end of the day.
The Hawks only champion for the day was 171-pound senior, Tyler Manternach who had a great day.
His first win of the day was over Jason Williams of Belle Plaine, advancing Tyler to the semi-finals where he would meet third ranked in Class 3A, Tyler Wingerson of Fort Dodge.
Tyler disposed of Wingerson, 5-2 to ad-vance to the title bout.
In the finals Tyler squared off against the top seed, Seth Bean of Williamsburg who en-tered the day with a 15-2 record and a No. 9 ranking.
A second period five point move was all that Manternach would need as he defeated Bean 10-1 to raise his record to 16-2 for the season.
The Hawks first finalist to hit the mat was at 145-pounds where senior Nick Ketchum lost a 9-1 major decision to Michael Kelly of Cedar Falls.
Nick won his first three matches of the tournament. In round one he defeated Saxon Dolan of Cedar Rapids Washington before doing away with Daniel Shinkle of Benton Community.
His semi-final match with Nate Halverson of Fort Dodge was a thriller. Nick scored an escape in the seventh period to pick up the win and move into the finals.
Adam Rave wrestling at 152-pounds also won his first three matches to advance to the finals.
Adam recorded falls over Justin Brown of Center Point Urbana, Kevin Walsh of Davenport Assumption and Kyle Whittington of Fort Dodge to make the finals.
In the finals he was defeated by second seeded Ethan Moorman of Centerville, 9-4.
Junior Carl Broghammer (189) was the second seed to top ranked Willie Argo of Davenport Assumption. Carl first defeated Sean Rider of Cedar Falls to advance to the semi-finals where he squared off against Matt Springer of Fort Dodge.
Carl pinned Springer to set up a finals match with top rated Argo.
Argo showed why he is rated at the top of the heap at 189 pounds with a first period win over Broghammer.
Nick Trenkamp who has been flying a bit under the radar this season pulled the top seed at heavyweight in the tour-nament.
Nick then took care of business in the quarterfinals and the semi-finals to advance to the championship match.
In his quarterfinal bout disposed of Calvin Clark of Centerville before doing away with the much talked about An-drew Bush of Davenport Assumption in the semi-finals.
In the finals Nick lost by fall to Austin Blythe of Williamsburg in the second period.
Also placing for the Hawks in the tournament were Brett Yonkovic (130) 4th, and Adam Mossner (215) 5th.
