The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team held its final home dual of the season last Thursday night when they hosted the Raiders of Anamosa.
The Hawks dominated the Raiders, winning 67-16.
The Raiders won the first match of the night when Dan Bieber recorded a pin over the Hawks Jared Hoefer.
Nathan Vaske wrestling at 119-pounds put the Hawks on the board with a pin in 2:31 of the Raiders Ryan Dolan.
Following forfeit wins by Brett Yonkovic (125) and Matt Wenger (130) the Hawks Andrew Pesek (135) lost a major decision to the Raiders Jesse Hansen.
Both teams forfeited at 140-pounds to make the score 24-16 in favor of the Hawks.
At that point the Hawks rattled off eight straight wins.
The run started with 145-pound senior, Nick Ketchum picking up a 10-1 major decision over Derek Young. Young had claimed the 140-pound title at Benton Community.
Adam Rave (152) and Devon Alber (160) both received forfeit wins to make the score 40-16.
Tyler Manternach (171) and Carl Broghammer (189) each picked up six points for the Hawks as they won their matches via pin.
Adam Mossner (215) received a forfeit.
When Hawk heavyweight Nick Trenkamp hit the mat if you turned to talk to the person sitting next to you when the whistle was blown, chances are you missed the action. Nick recorded a fall in just 11 seconds over the Raiders Sawyer Frazier.
PC McEnany (103) finished off the meet for the Hawks picking up a decision to make the final score 67-16.
The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team continues to get ready for the upcoming state tournament competition by competing in big week end tournaments.
This past Saturday the Hawks were at the always tough Cedar Rapids Jefferson Invitational Wrestling Tour-nament.
There were 12 teams in the tournament field, 10 of which were Class 3A teams. Among the wrestlers were some 29 ranked individuals.
The Class 3A teams com-peting were Boone, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Dubuque Hempstead, Fort Dodge, Fort Madison, Johnston, Marshalltown, Oskaloosa, Waterloo East and Waverly Shell Rock.
Humbolt and West Dela-ware were the only two Class 2A teams in the field.
With the Go-Hawks of Waverly Shell Rock in the field it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the other 11 teams would be fighting for second place. And that was the case as they won the meet by 99 points over second place Fort Dodge who scored 179 points to edge out the West Delaware Hawks who tallied 160 points while finishing in third place.
The Hawks placed 11 wrestlers in the top six places, led by junior 119-pounder Nathan Vaske who came home as the only Hawk champion.
Vaske came into the com-petition ranked number one at 119-pounds in Class 2A. He was however the second seed behind, Matt Boyington of Humbolt.
The seeding worked out as the two met for the title which Vaske won by a score of 6-4.
Nathan went 4-0 on the day with wins over Joel Wilson of Boone, Keegan Nelson of Fort Dodge, Luke Pint of Waverly Shell Rock and Boyington in the finals.
Nathan’s season record now stands at 21-1.
Of the 11 Hawks wrestling in placement matches at the end of the day, just three won their final match.
Besides Vaske, PC McE-nany claimed fifth and Brett Yonkovic third.
Yonkovic’s win in his third place match came over Cody Marsh of Fort Dodge by a score of 6-3.
Yonkovic had lost to Matt Kittleson of Waverly Shell Rock in the semi-finals, 5-4. Kittleson went on to take home the championship at 125-pounds for the Go-Hawks.
Four Hawks advanced to the finals and came home with second place finishes.
At 152-pounds, Adam Rave faced one of the top Class 3A 152-pounders in the state in Tommy VanRenterghem of Oskaloosa in the finals. VanRenterghem was able to hold Adam at bay while recording a 7-0 win.
At 171-pounds the Hawks Tyler Manternach found him-self in the finals for the second straight week. This time he was up against Lee Averhoff of Waverly Shell Rock. The two had a very good battle with Averhoff coming away with a 6-3 win.
At 189-pounds the Hawks Carl Broghammer lost to Matt Springer of Fort Dodge, 5-4 when Springer scored a two-point take down near the end of the match. The loss leaves Carl with a record of 19-2 on the year.
At 285-pounds the Hawks Nick Trenkamp advanced to the finals and had the dubious distinction of facing probably the top high school heavyweight in the nation win Waverly Shell Rock’s Eric Thompson. Thompson was able to win by fall to claim the 285-pound title.
Final Team Standings
1. Waverly Shell Rock 278, 2. Fort Dodge 179, 3. West Delaware 160, 4. Oskaloosa 133.5, 5. Cedar Rapids Jefferson 102.5, 6. Humboldt 92, 7. Waterloo East 78, 8. Fort Madison 77.5, 9. Boone 66.5, 10. Johnson 59, 11. Marshalltown 54, 12. Du-buque Hempstead 48.

A busy week for the West Delaware girls basketball team left them with three losses, one that will probably give them a lot of grief in the next year.
On Tuesday, the girls traveled to Beckman for a conference matchup with the Blazers, and came back with a 36-41 loss. Conference leader Marion handed the girls a 37-47 loss on Friday at home, and the annual matchup with Maquoketa Valley on Saturday saw the Hawks taking their third loss of the week, 43-46. The game against Maquoketa Valley is the only time each year the schools face each other, and it usually comes down to standing room only as residents of Delaware County pack the gym.
Beckman found themselves down by two at the end of the first quarter on Tuesday, 8-6, and came back to outscore the Hawks in the second quarter for a slight lead, 19-21, over the Hawks at the half.
Following a locker room chat, the Hawks went head-to-head with the Blazers, and each team put up 10 in the third quarter. The Blazers were ahead by just two points going into the final quarter of the game.
The Hawks manage to keep right up with the Blazers, but Beckman pulled ahead by five in the fourth to snag the victory from the Hawks. |
Joslyn Sailer was leading scorer for the Hawks, putting up 13 points and also grabbing eight rebounds. Emily Heffernen was right behind with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Looking to bounce back from the loss, but facing the conference leading Marion Indians, the Hawks were ready for some aggressive actio n at home o n Friday.
It was all Marion in the first quarter of the game. Tough defense from the Indians left the Hawks scoreless through the first three three minutes of the game, while the Marion offense put up seven points.
West Delaware managed two field goals in the first quarter, but needed a big second quarter to make up for the 13-4 deficit they faced.
