Hawks improve to 6-3 with win over Senior
by Alison Nesteby

Emily Heffernen once again dominated the court, scoring 22 points for the Hawks and pulling down 16 rebounds in West Delaware’s 56-47 victory over Dubuque Senior on Thursday, Dec. 20.

The Hawks improved their record to 6-3 with the win over the Rams.

The Hawks jumped out to an extreme lead in the first quarter, leaving the Rams in the dust 22-9. That first quarter lead would prove to be most important for the Hawks, as the remainder of the game was much more even between the two teams.

The Hawks were outscored by the Rams in the second quarter, and went to halftime holding a 31-21 lead.

Following a slow third quarter, where the Hawks put up six points and the Rams put up seven, both teams were fired up for the final eight minutes.

Kayla Gibbs nails a 3-pt shot against Dubuque Senior.

The Hawks went into the final quarter with an 11 point lead, and kept that lead for the remainder of the game. Both teams, however, recorded 19 points in the final quarter.

Thanks to the big first quarter, the Hawks won by nine and jumped their record to a .666 win percentage.

Adding to Heffernen’s 22 points were Ashley Hood with nine and Kayla Vaske with eight. Sara Heffernen pulled down 10 rebounds, while Joslyn Sailer grabbed seven.

The Hawks will resume play in Vinton on Friday, Jan. 4, and will travel to Beckman on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
