WD Hawk Emily Heffernen gets some hang time at the Oelwein quad this past Thursday as Kayla Vaske prepares for the block.
It was the Hawk show at the Oelwein quad volleyball tournament this past Thursday. No one really had a chance to put up any competition as the Hawks won the quad in six games, defeating Oelwein, Independence and Starmont each in two games.

The Hawks started the night out right, defeating Independence with a score of 21-1, and coming back with a second game win, 21-8.

The next victim was Oelwein, who put up a better fight than Independence, but was still no match for the all mighty Hawks. Oelwein was quickly handed two losses on their home court, 21-9 and 21-19.

To wrap up the night, West Delaware stomped all over Starmont to win the quad tournament. Scores ended up 21-10 and 21-5.
A steady combination of good defense and solid offense led the Hawks to their early season wins.

Strong kills from senior Emily Heffernen, junior Tessa Reinig and freshmen Allison Pasker racked up the points for the Hawks, and a good back row provided the neccesary defense to put the Hawks first wins behind them.

West Delaware took first, with Oelwein in second, Starmont in third, and a young Indpendence team taking fourth.

Coming off a 49-1 2006 season, the Hawks were rated number five in the pre-season polls, but if play continues like it did Thursday, they will be quick to move up in the rankings.

West Delaware played in the Vinton-Shellsburg tournament on Saturday, Sept. 1, but due to the Labor Day holiday, The Press was printed on Friday, Aug. 31. Results from the tournament, along with results from the Hawks’ match with Marion on Tuesday, Sept. 4, will be in the Sept. 11 paper.
