Hawks get back on track with 17-3 win over Independence
by Ken Boesenberg
|
The West Delaware Hawk varsity football team traveled to Independence last Friday night for a district contest against the Mustangs.
Dan Marshall passed for 195 yards and one touchdown as the Hawks defeated the Mustangs 17-3.
The West Delaware rushing game which has been the mainstay of the Hawk offense for the first three games of the season managed just 77 yards on 30 carries at Independence.
Destry Sperfslage who had rushed for more than 360 yards in his first two games at runningback was held to 14 yards on 16 carries.
Marshall picked up the slack with seven completions in 13 attempts during the fourth quarter alone.

The fourth quarter is when the Hawks made their move on the Mustangs as they trailed by a score of 3-0 at the half.
Jamie Helmrichs kicked
a 26-yard field goal for the Hawks with 8:20 left in the third quarter to pull the Hawks even with the Mustangs.
A pair of late fourth quarter touchdowns evened the Hawks District 4 record at 1-1.
The Hawks first two possessions of the game resulted in punts while the third was haulted because of a fumble.
At the same time Independence wasn’t fairing much better as they were forced to punt on their first possession before having possessions two and three stopped via turnovers.
Nate Neuhaus got the first Hawk turnover by intercepting a Mustang pass while Jake Nordaas recovered a fumble for the Hawks.
Unfortunately West Delaware could not capitalize on either Mustang turnover, twice failing to score from inside the Independence 10 yard line.
Following the second fumble of the game by the Hawks the Mustangs moved from the Hawk 46 to the eight before having to settle for a field goal with just three seconds left in the first half.
West Delaware forced the Mustangs to punt on their first possession of the second half.
Facing third and 14 from their own 46 Dan Marshall connected with Destry Sperfslage on a 37 yard pass to get the Hawks down to the Mustang nine.
After failing to score in three plays the Hawks settled for a 26-yard field goal by Jamie Helmrichs to knot the score at 3-3.
The next two possessions by each team resulted in punts.
The Mustangs fourth possession of the third quarter resulted in an interception by the Hawks Devon
Alber at the Hawk nine yard line.
A pair of Dan Marshall to Ben Lechtenberg passes to the Hawks out to mid-field. Unfortunately their third lost fumble of the game gave the ball right back to the Mustangs with the game still tied at 3-3.
On a first down play by the Mustangs from the Hawk 35 West Delaware’s Nick Ronnebaum stole the ball from the Mustangs Cameron Hayward.
With 4:47 left in the game the Hawks needed some sort of drive from their own 27 to avoid their second straight overtime contest of the season.
That’s when Dan Marshall heated up. He Ben Lechtenberg from six yards to the 33 on first down. However, after and incomplete pass and an illegal motion call the Hawks were faced with a third and nine from their own 28.
Marshall again hooked up with Lechtenberg, this time good for 34 yards and a Hawk first down at the Mustang 38.
Again it looked as if a Hawk drive would stall out but on fourth and 12 from the Independence 40 Marshall connected with Devon Alber on a 21 pass play to give the Hawks a first down at the Mustang 19.
After a short pass of four yards to Ben Lechtenberg, Marshall hit Derek Klein in the endzone from 16 yards out to give the Hawks a 9-3 lead.
Jamie Helmrichs connected on the PAT for a 10-3 lead.
The Mustangs tried to run the ball on their first two plays following the Hawk kick off but were unable to move the ball. Their fourth and five pass fell incomplete giving West Delaware the ball with 1:36 left in the game.
With just a seven point lead and the way the play-off picture in District 4 was looking the Hawks decided to try and put one more score on the board to take advantage of the 13-point rule.
With Nate Lynch running the ball and the aid of a Mustang penalty the Hawks were able to cover the 13 points when Lynch scored from four yards out with just 47 seconds left in the game.
Helmrichs again converted the PAT for a 17-3 lead and win.

#1 rated Hawks continue to pound competition

It appears there’s no stopping the Hawks. They’ve played in four tournaments, and won four tournaments. Their overall record is 25-2 and their conference record sits at 2-0. Bring on the competition; they can take it.
A very tough Western Dubuque team visited Manchester last Tuesday only to head home with a loss at the hands of the Hawks. WD kept the electricity up on the court to take a 3-1 victory from the Bobcats. Unfortunately, the electricity in the gym was briefly interrupted when a blackout delayed the game for about 15 minutes.
The Hawks kept the games close and exciting for the fans, winning the first, third and fourth games by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 27-25. The Bobcats won the second game 25-22.
It was Vinton Shellsburg’s turn to come to town for a beating on Thursday.
The Vikings didn’t even squeak one victory by the Hawks.
However, they did keep the scores close and the games competitive. WD won by scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.
Following a strong week of competition, the Hawks traveled to Monticello for another tournament; and returned to town with yet another championship.
Monticello was victim number one, quickly getting beat by the Hawks 21-10 and 21-12.
|
Then came Tripoli, who also didn’t give the Hawks much of a headache. WD won those games 21-13 and 21-14.
Maquoketa was quick as well; 21-3 and 21-11 victories for the Hawks.
DeWitt brought some good competition for the Hawks the first game, but seemed to falter the second game. WD won by scores of 25-22 and 25-13.
After being beat by the Hawks, Tripoli came around the rest of the competition in the tournament to meet WD in the championship. It appeared something really came together for them after the first match with the Hawks, because even though they lost again, the scores were immensely better. WD won the championship by scores of 26-24 and 25-22.
WD will travel to Dyersville Tuesday to take on the Blazers. After that, they will have a break until next Tuesday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Central DeWitt.
