by Ken Boesenberg
|
For the first three and a half quarters of the game against Oelwein last Friday night it looked like the West Delaware Hawk football team would improve its overall record to 3-0, 1-0 in district play.
However, was able to score twice in the final 5:44 of the game to send the contest into overtime.
The Huskies got an 11-yard scoring pass from sophomore quarterback Paul Yokas to Brian Woods in the first OT period to take a 21-14 lead.
Oelwein then held the Hawks out of the end zone on their overtime possession to defeat West Delaware 21-14.
The game was not without its chances, for both teams.

Two straight running plays by Destry Sperfslage gave the Hawks a first and goal at the Huskie 10.
West Delaware moved the ball to the two but could not cross the goal line.
The Hawks got on the board first at the 3:19 mark of the second quarter on a perfectly thrown ball from quarterback Dan Marshall to wide receiver Ben Lechtenberg.
Lechtenberg went high into the air to make the catch over the outstretched arms of an Oelwein receiver.
Jamie Helmrichs added the PAT to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead.
The first half ended with the Hawks holding their one touchdown lead.
West Delaware was forced to punt on each of their first two possessions of the second half.

On the second play following the Huskie kick off Oelwein picked off a Dan Marshall pass with 4:50 left.
The Hawk defense stiffened and regained possession of the ball when a fourth down Huskie pass fell incomplete.

On third and eight from the Hawk 29 Destry Sperfslage reeled off a 19-yard run but was stripped of the ball at the Hawk 48 yard line with a little more than 30 seconds left in the game.
The Hawks flushed Yokas out of the pocket on the first play and the Huskie quarterback was called for intentional grounding. That penalty set the Huskies back to their own 44 yard line.
Another incomplete pass stopped the clock with 12.4 seconds left.
On the next play the Hawks put a lot of pressure on Yokas and had his receivers covered, forcing him to throw the ball up for grabs with no time left on the game clock.
The ball came down between three Hawk defenders and one Huskie receiver. The ball bounced into the air and came down in the hands of the Huskies Adam Bell who raced into the end zone untouched.
The successful PAT tied the game at 14-14 and sent it in to overtime.

Destry Sperfslage led the Hawks in rushing with another huge night. He ran for 183 yards on 22 carries.
Dan Marshall in his first varsity start at quarterback did a good job for the Hawks. He completed three of seven passes, had one picked off and three a touchdown pass.
