Hawks dominate Homecoming 2007 with 51-0 win over Vinton Shellsburg
by Ken Boesenberg

The West Delaware football team got back on the winning track last Friday night with a 51-0 route of Vinton Shellsburg.
The huge night was much to the delight of a large crowd that had come out to celebrate Homecoming 2007.
After the Hawks had been forced to punt on their first two possessions they finally got on the board with 1:42 left in the first quarter.
Dan Marshall’s one-yard quarterback sneak for the score was set up by an inter-ception by the Hawks Lucas Kafer.
Kafer returned the inter-ception to the Viking three-yard line.
The PAT was no good, leaving the Hawks with a 6-0 lead.
The Hawks next score came on their first play of the second quarter when Dan Marshall connected with Ben Lechtenberg from nine-yards out.
The Hawks two point at-tempt after the score was no good making the score 12-0 with 11:42 left in the second quarter.
The West Delaware defense stepped up on the Vikings next two possessions, forcing them to punt both times. |

The Hawks Zach Boss (top photo) covers the ball up as he surges ahead for some extra yardage against Vinton. Nate Lynch (bottom photo) had a big night for the Hawks against Vinton as he ran for 142 yards and scored four touchdowns in the 51-0 shut out win. |
West Delaware made short work of their next possession following a short Vinton punt.
The Hawks took over at the Viking 21 and moved to the Vinton one on a Dan Mar-shall to Derek Klein pass of 15 yards.
Following an offside call on the Hawks Nate Lynch scored and added the two-point conversion to give the Hawks a 20-0 lead with 6:10 left before half time.
For the lack of fire power early in the game the Hawks found their stride during the second period.
Already up 20-0 the Hawk defense once again forced the Vikings to punt.
The Hawks started on their own 40 and were moved back to their own 45 following an off-sides penalty. Nate Lynch got the penalty yards back with a five-yard run off right tackle.
On the very next play Lynch broke free up the mid-dle of the field and rambled 51 yards for his second touchdown of the game.
Jamie Helmrichs added the PAT to give West Delaware a 27-0 lead with 3:40 left in the first half.
The West Delaware defense held the Vikings on downs at the Vinton 47 with 1:55 to go in the second quarter.
The Hawks ran the same play to Nate Lynch that he had scored on just two min-utes earlier. It worked again as he rumbled 47 yards for his third touchdown of the game and a 33-0 Hawk lead.
Helmrichs again added the PAT to make the score 34-0 with 1:44 left before half-time.
West Delaware got the ball to start the third quarter. They picked up right where they left off in the first half.
This time they drove 68-yards in 11 plays, culminated by a Nate Lynch 10-yard TD run with 7:04 left in the third period.
Helmrichs added his third straight PAT to up the Hawk lead to 41-0.
Following Vinton’s sixth punt of the game the Hawks took possession of the ball at their own 37-yard line.
With junior Ben McDonald in the back field for the first time in what seems like for-ever the Hawks put him to work.
McDonald responded very well to the challenge. His first carry was good for five yards to the Hawks 42. His next carry was a pretty 53-yard jaunt that end when he was tackled at the Viking 5.
On the very next play McDonald scored to up the lead to 47-0. Helmrichs was good again on his PAT for a 48-0 lead.
Again the Hawk defense stopped the Vikings in their tracks and forced them to punt.
The Hawks started the fourth and final quarter with the ball on their own 41.
They moved all the way down to the Viking 20 where they faced third and 13. On the next play a fumble moved the ball back to the Viking 27 where it was fourth and 20.
The Hawks called time out and set up Jamie Helmrichs for a field goal attempt of 44-yards. The snap was perfect the hold was perfect and the kick ended up being perfect. The ball came down on the cross bar, bounced nearly straight in the air, but did bounce back far enough to come down on the other side of the cross bar making the kick good.
With that additional three points on the board the Hawks led 51-0, which was the final score.
