Hawks lose tough battle at South Tama, 35-21
by Ken Boesenberg
It was a rough night for the West Delaware Hawk football team last Friday night when they visited South Tama.

South Tama runningback, Hunter Else who came into the game averaging 10 yards per carry picked up 254 yards on 25 carries scoring four touchdowns to lead the Trojans past the Hawks 35-21.

There is a reason why the Trojans were one of only two unbeaten teams in Class 3A. They are good. Not flashy by any means but efficient with what they do.

The Hawks did manage to put more points on the board than any other team this year. South Tama had allowed just 35 total points all year, so the 21 the Hawks scored bodes well for how the West Delaware offense played.

West Delaware came out and stopped the Trojans on their first series, forcing them to punt after running just five plays.

The Hawks took over on their own 30. On the very first play from scrimmage Dan Marshall hit wide receiver Ben Lechtenberg down the left side line for 28 yards to the Trojan 42.

The Hawks Derek Klein and Tyler Manternach make a tackle in the top photo while quarterback Dan Marshall hands off to Nate Lynch with Justin Wenger (#58) and Billy Domeyer (#75) blocking.
Another Marshall to Lechtenberg pass moved the Hawks to the South Tama 26 where three plays later the two hooked up again. This time the play was good for 21 yards and a Hawk touchdown.

Jamie Helmrichs converted the PAT to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter.

South Tama answered the Hawk score when on their next drive they marched 74 yards to knot the score at 7-7 on a Hunter Else 8-yard run.

The Trojans would score on their next two possessions to up their lead to 21-7 with 7:11 left in the second quarter.

Neither team would have any success for the remainder of the first half.

The Hawks got the ball to start the second half but were forced to punt after running just four plays.

South Tama would score their fourth touchdown of the game just nine plays after taking over on their own 16 yard line.

This time it would be Hunter Else finishing off the drive with a 57-yard scoring jaunt.

With 4:50 left in the third quarter the Trojans were up 28-7.

West Delaware had two more possessions in the third quarter but both times went three and out as the Trojan defense stiffened.

South Tama scored their fifth and final touchdown of the game with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.

They started their drive on their own 31 and took just three plays to cover the remaining 69 yards.

Else ran for 14 yards before quarterback Karac Davenport picked up 10 yards on a keeper. Else then finished off the drive as he raced 45 yards to pay dirt with 20.4 second left in the third.

The Hawks came right back on their next possession with Dan Marshall scoring from two yards out on a fourth and goal play.

The touchdown pulled the Hawks to within 35-14 with 9:36 remaining in the game.

The Hawks then recovered a South Tama fumble at the South Tama 43.

Marshall fired a pass to Ben Lechtenberg who made a leaping catch goof for 30 yards to the Trojan 13.

After Ben McDonald got the Hawks to the Trojan 6 the Hawks were called for holding pushing them back to the 19.

A Ben McDonald rush netted just a yard, that left the Hawks facing fourth and 19 at the Trojan 21.

Again it was Dan Marshall finding Ben Lechtenberg, this time it was good for 19 and a half yards to just inside the Trojan two yard line. It was good enough for a first and goal.

It did take the Hawks five plays to score from the two as Marshall followed center Nathan King into the endzone on a quarterback sneak with 2:09 left in the game.

South Tama would get to the Hawk 10 yard line when time ran out in the game.
This Friday night the Hawks will host Grinnell in their final game of the season.
