Hawks down Decorah, return to Cellular Center
by Ken Boesenberg
|
The West Delaware Hawk volleyball team will be making a return trip to the Girls State Volleyball Tournament in Cedar Rapids. The Hawks will enter the tournament with a 41-4 record.
They earned this years trip with a convincing 3 games to none win over Decorah last Tuesday night in Cedar Falls.
The Hawks were just as dominating in this Regional Finals match as they were in the Regional Semi-Final against Charles City.
The Hawks took the three games by scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-18.
West Delaware raced out to a 4-1 lead very early in game one behind kills by Tess Reinig and Emily Heffernen. Reining also had an ace serve in her second serve of the game.

West Delaware senior and Drake recruit Emily Heffernen smashes on of her dozen kills against the Decorah Vikings last week. The Hawks are the top rated team in Class 3A and are looking to advance to the finals of this years state tournament this coming Saturday in Cedar Rapids. |
Decorah came back and took a 6-5 lead before the Hawks hit their offensive stride and gradually pulled away from the Vikings.
Tess Reinig led the Hawks in game one with four kills, Emily Heffernen had three kills with the last one ending the game 25-13.
In game two West Delaware started off slowly, falling behind 5-1.
It was then that senior Drake recruit, Emily Heffernen took over. She swatted three kills and had a block for a point to lead the Hawks to an 8-5 lead.
A combined block by Ashlee Allison and Heffernen together with a block and a kill by Emily Havertape gave the Hawks a 12-7 lead and forced the Vikings to take a time out and regroup.
Over the remaining points in the game the Hawks steadily increased their lead from the five point advantage to nine points, 25-16 at the end.
Leading the Hawks in game two were Tess Reinig 2 kills, Emily Heffernen 5 kills, Ashlee Allison 1 kills, and Emily Havertape 2 kills.
Tess Wegner had an ace serve for the Hawks.
In game three Decorah did a good job of digging the Hawk kill attempts.
However, in the end it was just too much West Delaware firepower for the Vikings to contend with.
After taking a 22-18 lead the Hawks scored the last three points of the game and the match for 28-18 game victory and a 3-0 match win.
Emily Heffernen had 3 kills, Emily Havertape 4 kills, Ashlee Allison 1 kill, Tess Reinig 2 kills and freshman Allison Pasker 1 kill.
