Hawk baseball team starts season with a sweep of Clinton

The Hawks Garrett Linderwell tossed a four-hitter against Clinton in a 15-2 game one win. He also drove in six runs with three hits for the Hawks.
The West Delaware boys baseball team got the season off to a good start last week with double header sweep of Clinton.

On Monday night the Hawks hosted the River Kings for a double header on Exide Field.

The Hawks defended their home field with a 15-2 victory in game one before taking the night cap by a score of 6-4.

In the opening game 15-2 victory Garrett Linderwell limited the River Kings to just four hits. He struck out five, walked two and hit one batter during the five inning contest.

Linderwell also helped his own cause at the plate as he banged out three hits and drove in six runs.

BJ Hermsen also had a very productive game one for the Hawks as he belted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs.

Zach McCool led off the fourth inning with a solo home run as the Hawks cracked four home runs in the first game.

West Delaware got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Zach McCool reached on an error and BJ Hermsen hit his first of two home runs to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

With two out, Nate Lahr doubled and Nathan King walked. Ryan Hauser, running for Lahr stole third and King swiped second to put a pair of runners in scoring position.

Garrett Linderwell followed with the first of his three hits in the game by delivering a two-run single to extend the Hawk lead to 4-0.

After a scoreless second the Hawks put up three more runs in the third.

Nate Lahr and Nathan King stroked back-to-back singles. Again Hauser ran for Lahr and picked up his second stolen base of the night by taking second. An error on the throw allowed Hauser to score.

Linderwell followed with a two run home run to up the Hawk lead to 7-0.

Clinton got both of their runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a Hawk fielding error and a passed ball.

West Delaware broke the game open in the home half of the fourth inning by pushing across eight runs for a 15-2 lead.

Zach McCool and BJ Hermsen stroked back-to-back solo home runs to start the inning.

Justin Gideon and Nate Lahr followed with consecutive singles. Following a walk to Nathan King, Garrett Linderwell drove in his fifth and sixth runs of the game with a sharp single to right field.

An RBI fielders choice by Chris Harbaugh and an RBI double by Brad McDonald gave the Hawks a 13-2 lead.

BJ Hermsen drove in the Hawks final two runs of the game with a single.

Linderwell set the River Kings down in order in the top of the fifth inning to pick up his first win of the season.

Hitting summary game 1 vs. Clinton - Brad McDonald 1-3, Zach McCool 1-2, BJ Hermsen 4-4, Justin Gideon 1-3, Nate Lahr 3-3, Nathan King 1-1, Garrett Linderwell 3-3, Lucas Kafer 0-3, Chris Harbaugh 0-3.

Things were not as easy in the night cap for the Hawks.

Clinton touched Hawk ace, BJ Hermsen for a pair of solo home runs in each of the first two innings, however the Hawks countered with a three run bottom of the first home run by Nathan King to take a 4-1 lead.

The Hawks would not trail again as they won game two by a score of 6-4.

West Delaware scored all four of their first inning runs after two were out.

Following ground outs by the first two batters, Brad McDonald and Zach McCool BJ Hermsen drew a walk as did Justin Gideon.

With two on and two out Nate Lahr rapped his fourth straight hit of the night, a run scoring double to tie the game at 1-1.

Nathan King then followed with a towering home run that bounced over the road well beyond the left field fence for a 4-1 Hawk lead.

Clinton’s second home run of the game off Hermsen closed the Hawk lead to two runs, 4-2.

West Delaware scored its final two runs of the game in the home half of the second inning.

Chris Harbaugh led off with a walk and Zach McCool followed with a one out double to score Harbaugh all the way from first.

McCool took third on the throw from the outfield tying to cut down Harbaugh at home.

BJ Hermsen followed with a long fly ball to deep center field that was caught, scoring McCool easily from third for the Hawks sixth run of the game.

Clinton scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a walk, a single and a pair of Hawk throwing errors to pull to within two runs, 6-4.

Neither team would capitalize on several more scoring opportunities and the final score ended at 6-4 in favor of West Delaware.

Winning pitcher, BJ Hermsen tossed five innings allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out six, walking four and hitting two batters.

Justin Gideon tossed the final two innings and did not allow a run. He struck out two, gave up three hits and hit two batters in his two innings of relief.

Vikings split with Clayton Ridge, East Central

The Ed-Co Viking baseball team opened their season with an 11-4 win over Clayton Ridge on Monday, May 21 in Garnavillo.

The Vikings scored first in the contest when Adam Clauson drove in Ryan Putz on one of his three hits in the game.

After the Eagles reclaimed the lead, 2-1 in the home half of the second inning the Vikings took the lead for good in the top of the second inning.

A walk, a hit batsman and five Clayton Ridge wild pitches plated a pair of runs for the Vikings.

Ed-Co added three more runs in the top of the third inning to take 6-2 lead. The sixth run crossing the plate on a suicide squeeze bunt by Kyle Sommers.
The Vikings scored four more runs over the final three innings to win by a final score of 11-4.

The Vikings scored their 11 runs on just six hits as they were aided by eight walks, four hit batsmen and three Clayton Ridge errors. Ed-Co baserunners stole eight bases during the contest.

Ryan Putz earned the pitching victory as he went the distance allowing eight hits while striking out four Clayton Ridge batters.

Adam Clauson was the leading offensive producer for the Vikings as he collected three hits and walked twice.

“This was a pretty good first outing for us. We executed our sacrifice bunts and suicide squeezes very well. While our bats were a bit slow, we found ways to put pressure on Clayton Ridge and generate a few runs in the process,” commented Viking skipper Mike Putz.

On Wednesday night the Vikings hosted East Central of Miles in their home opener.

The Raiders scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the home team, 4-1.

Viking starting pitcher Patrick Moore worked himself out of trouble in the first inning after two of the first three East Central runners reached base.

Ed-Co scored the first run of the game in the home half of the third inning.

Pitcher Patrick Moore lined a double to left center field. Brian Daker’s single with two out scored the courtesy runner for Moore to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning Moore again worked himself out of trouble as the lead off batter got to third with one out. Moore then struck out the next to batters to retire the sides and maintain the Viking one run lead.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the seventh inning when the Raiders scored three runs.

All the scoring came with two out. After retiring the first batter on a fly ball to left field Moore struck out the number nine man in the Raider lineup.

However, a walk and error and a pair of singles plated three runs to five East Central a 4-1 lead.

Brett Streicher gave the Vikings some hope in the bottom of the seventh with a one out double but he was stranded as the next two batters struck out.

Getting hits for the Vikings were Brian Daker 1-2 with an RBI, Adam Clauson 1-3, Brett Streicher 1-1, and Patrick Moore 1-3.

Moore tossed the complete game allowing seven hits while walking just one and striking out eight batters.
