The West Delaware Hawk boys basketball team took it’s initial step towards a possible berth in the state tournament with a 24-point win over Oelwein, 59-35, last Monday night in Manchester.

The Hawks scored early and often as they jumped out to a 20-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A pair of three-pointers by BJ Hermsen and a put back by Matt Rolfes gave the Hawks an 8-0 lead just a minute and a half into the contest.

The Hawk defense held the Huskies without a field goal for the entire first quarter. Their only points came from the free throw line.

The action got a bit ragged in the second quarter with both teams making some early turnovers.

A lay-up by Chris Crawford and a short jumper by Austin Cole extended the West Delaware lead to 24-3 before Oelwein scored it first field goal.

The Hawks kept the Huskies at bay in the second quarter, leading 32-15 at the half.

Oelwein was a different team at the start of the second half. They opened the third quarter with a 9-2 scoring run to cut the West Delaware lead to 10-points, 34-24 with six minutes to go in the quarter.

BJ Hermsen and Ben Lechtenberg then scored 11 of the Hawks next 13 points to rebuild the West Delaware lead to 16-points, 47-31 by the end of the quarter.

Hermsen led the Hawks in scoring with 22 points, Austin Cole added 11 and sophomore Ben Lechtenberg tossed in 9.

Ben Lechtenberg scores two of his 14 points from close range Saturday.

Justin Giedon knocks down a short jumper over Ryan Jones of Waukon.
The Hawks upped their lead back over the 20-point margin when Justin Gideon dropped in a three-point shot at the 4:50 mark.

BJ Hermsen scored five straight points for the Hawks to up the lead to 57-33 before coach Tony Tjaden emptied the bench for the final three minutes of the game.

Lucas Kafer’s two free throws with 1:32 left made the final score 59-35 in favor the the Hawks.

The Hawks with their win advanced to the District Championship game against Waukon.

Waukon defeated Decorah 50-46 in a game played at Waukon, Monday, Feb. 26.

The Hawks and Indians of Waukon were originally scheduled to play last Thursday which got postponed to Friday which got again postponed to last Saturday at Upper Iowa University at 2:00 p.m.

The trip to Fayette was not for those that dislike ugly winter driving conditions as the roads were less than desirable.

The Hawks however, found the confines of Upper Iowa University to their liking as they shot 52% from the floor and 71% from the free throw line to down Waukon, 51-41.

That win moved them into the sub-state final contest, just one win away from a trip to the 2007 Boys State Basketball Tournament.

West Delaware was led by a pair of underclassmen, junior BJ Hermsen with 16 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots and sophomore Ben Lechtenberg. Lechtenberg scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and also had three blocked shots for the victorious Hawks.

Phil Keppler and Chris Crawford dished out five assists each to lead the Hawks.

Waukon got out to an early 7-0 lead before West Delaware got it’s first points on the board. BJ Hermsen scored on a short jumper and a three-point shot to pull the Hawks back into the game.

Waukon led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks hit just one of four free throw attempts in the first quarter and after scoring their first points then outscored Waukon 8-3 for the rest of the quarter.

West Delaware used a 13-2 run over a two minute and 50-second stretch of the second quarter to come from four points down, 16-12 to being up 25-18.

During that run Ben Lechtenberg beat the Indians on the inside and was fouled three times. He made five of six free throws while teammate, Austin Cole tossed in six points.

Lechtenberg scored the Hawks final four points of the first half, from close in as West Delaware took a 29-24 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Hawks made eight of 10 free throws during that second quarter.

After a Chris Crawford three-point goal opened the second half for the Hawks the Indians held the Hawks scoreless for nearly six minutes to retake the lead, 33-32 on a field goal by Waukon’s Derek Snitker.

A pair of free throws by Austin Cole and a basket by Ben Lechtenberg gave the Hawks a 36-35 led at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Hawks did to the Indians like the Indians had done to them in the third quarter. Shut them down for six minutes and 17 seconds while scoring 11 points of their own to take a commanding 10 point lead, 47-37 with 1:28 left in the game.

BJ Hermsen scored the Hawks final four points of the game, all from the line to seal the District Championship victory for West Delaware.

The Hawks will travel to Cedar Falls and face the Go-Hawks of Waverly Shell Rock, Tuesday evening at the McLeod Center on the campus of UNI, 6:30 p.m.

Waverly Shell Rock defeated Crestwood, 75-56 for their District Championship and the right to move into the sub-state final game with West Delaware.

Interestingly enough, there were as of Monday (yesterday) still five WaMaC Conference teams with chances to get the the Boys State Basketball Tournament.

Besides West Delaware, there was DeWitt Central (18-5) in a sub-state final against Cedar Rapids Xavier (11-12); Benton Community (15-8) in a sub-state final against Grinnell (16-7); and Dyersville Beckman (13-10) in a sub-state final against the fifth WaMaC school, Waterloo Columbus (14-10).
