Hawk boys slam five home runs in double header sweep of Oelwein

The West Delaware boy varsity baseball team traveled to Oelwein last Wednesday night for a non-conference double header with the Huskies.
It was all West Delaware as the Hawks swatted five home runs in the two game sweep to improve to 4-0 on the season.
In game one it wasn’t just the Hawk bats that did the damage.
Junior pitcher, BJ Hermsen turned in a spectacular performance on the mound.
He struck out the first eight Oelwein batters he faced. By the time the game ended at the end of the sixth inning via the 10-run rule Hermsen had struck out 16 of the 20 batters he faced. He allowed just one hit in the game.

Over the next three innings the Hawk bats were silenced as they were able to get just one hit, an opposite field double by Phil Keppler in the third inning for their only base runner over that three inning stretch.
Things changed in the top of the fifth.
After Brad McDonald reached on a fielders choice, Keppler followed with his home run to left field for a 4-0 Hawk lead.
Zach McCool then doubled and BJ Hermsen followed with a two-run home run to up the Hawk lead to 6-0.
In the top of the sixth the Hawks sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs to win game one 13-0.
Nate Lahr started the inning off with a home run to left field. Then three straight hits by Nathan King, Alex Ryan and Chris Harbaugh gave the Hawks two more runs.
The Hawk lead went to 12-0 on a two-run single by Clarke Butler who was hitting for Justin Gideon.
West Delaware scored its final run on a fielders choice by Nate Lahr.
Hermsen set down the Huskies in order in the home half of the sixth to give the Hawks a 13-0 win.
Getting hits for the Hawks were Phil Keppler 2 for 3; Zach McCool 1 for 2; BJ Hermsen 1 for 2; Clarke Butler 1 for 1; Nate Lahr 1 for 4; Alex Ryan 1 for 3; Nathan King 1 for 2; Chris Harbaugh 2 for 3.
In game two the Hawks used three different pitchers and a pair of two-run home runs to defeat the Huskies 7-0.
Zach McCool got the Hawks started with a two run blast in the top of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead.
Nathan King added a two run shot in the top of the second for a 4-0 West Delaware lead. The Hawks upped the lead to 6-0 on consecutive singles by Phil Keppler, Zach McCool and BJ Hermsen.
The Hawks final run of the game came on a single by Nathan King in the top of the fifth inning.
Phil Keppler started the game on the mound for the Hawks and went two innings for the win. He gave up one hit and struck out four.
Zach McCool tossed innings three and four for the Hawks. he allowed one hit, struck out five and hit a pair of batters.
Mitch Mormann tossed the final inning recording two ground outs and a strike out to end the game.
The game was stopped at the end of the fifth inning because of threatening weather.
After just two games last week the Hawks have a full schedule this coming week.
On Monday (last night) they hosted Waterloo Columbus for a conference double header;
Wednesday they have a JV , varsity double header with Dubuque Wahlert; Thursday is a varsity double header with conference foe Independence. The Hawks end the week with a two varsity games in Ft. Dodge. |

The West Delaware girls softball team opened up the 2007 season with a double headers split against Oelwein last Tuesday night in Manchester.
The Hawks dropped game one, 5-1 before coming back in game two to win by a score of 4-0.
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one as they touched starting pitcher, Katie Murphy for a pair of hits.
West Delaware came back in the home half of the first inning to cut the Husky lead to 2-1.
Lead off batter, Kayla Bries reached on an error and sacrificed to second by Ashley Hood. Lindsey McDowell followed with a one out single to score Bries.
The Huskies scored two more runs in the top of the third inning on a pair of hits and a Hawk error to take a 4-1 lead.
That three run lead would be more than enough as the Hawks struggled to get the timely hit they needed. Three times during the game they had the bases loaded by failed to get a run home.
Lindsey McDowell led the Hawks offensively as she collected three hits in four at bats. Freshman, Jenna Hermsen batting in the nine position had two hits in three trips to the plate.
Katie Wessels had the Hawks sixth hit, a two out seventh inning double.
In taking the loss in game one Katie Murphy tossed seven innings giving up five runs (one earned) while striking out six and walking four.
Game two was a different outing for Murphy as she just 24 batters in seven innings of work.
She got all the run support she would need in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sara Hermsen hit a two-run home run to right center field.
The Hawks added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win by a final score of 4-0.
Murphy allowed just two Oelwein hits in game two. She struck out three and walked just one batter.
Offensively the Hawks collected five hits, one each by Lindsey McDowell, Katie Wessels, Katie Murphy, and Renee Bockenstedt. Sara Hermsen had two hits including the big two-run fourth inning home run.
On Thursday the Hawks hosted the Class 4A Lancers of North Scott on Sill Field for a non-conference double header.
Senior pitcher, Katie Murphy was on her game in the nights first contest as she tossed seven innings of one-hit ball leading the Hawks to a 5-1 win victory.
Murphy set down the first 13 Lancers in order and faced just three batters over the minimum in the contest.
The Hawks scored the games first run in the home half of the third inning. Jenna Hermsen led off with a single and later came into score on a single by Lindsey McDowell.
The Hawks second run of the inning came when Ashley Hood reached on a error by the North Scott pitcher and then stole second and eventually swiped home when the Lancer defense was caught napping.
West Delaware added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles by Jenny Hood and Haley Klein. Klein scored the second run with some nifty base running to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when Sara Hermsen led off with a single. Allison Pasker, running for Hermsen scored on Jenny Hood’s second double of the game to up the Hawk lead to 5-0.
North Scott scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh on a hit batsman and a double. Murphy then got the next three batters with the final out coming on a ground out to second baseman Kayla Bries.
Winning pitcher, Katie Murphy gave up one run on one hit while striking out eight batters.
Getting hits for the Hawks were Lindsey McDowell 2 for 3; Sara Hermsen 1 for 3; Katie Murphy 1 for 2; Jenny Hood 2 for 3; Haley Klein 1 for 2; and Jenna Hermsen 1 for 3.
Game two of the double header saw the Lancers jump out on top 1-0 with a run in the top of the first.
The Hawks took the lead, 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
Katie Wessels led off with a walk followed by Sara Hermsen’s double. With runners on second and third Katie Murphy lined a single to right field to score Wessels.
Allison Pasker, running for Hermsen scored on a ground out to the pitcher by Jenny Hood.
The Hawks upped the lead to 4-1 in the home half of the third inning.
Jenna Hermsen received a lead off walk and stole second. Hermsen advanced to third on Ashley Hood’s ground out to third and scored on Kayla Bries’ single.
Bries would later come into score on an error by the Lancer catcher to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
North Scott bounced back in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs on three hits to cut the Hawk lead to 4-3.
West Delaware scored the its final run in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Katie Wessels and a run scoring single by Sara Hermsen.
Katie Murphy retired nine of the final 10 Lancer batters with the game ending on a ground out from third baseman Lindsey McDowell to Katie Wessels at first.
Winning pitcher, Katie Murphy allowed the three Lancer runs on six hits while striking out nine batters.
Getting hits for the Hawks were Kayla Bries 1 for 3; Katie Wessels 1 for 1; Sara Hermsen 2 for 3 and Katie Murphy 2 for 3.
The double header sweep of North Scott upped the Hawks record to 3-1.
On Saturday the Hawks traveled to Charles City for three games in the Charles City Tournament.
In their first game of the tournament they defeated the host Comets of Charles City 1-0.
The Hawks scored their run on a double by Lindsey McDowell and a perfectly executed squeeze play by Sara Hermsen.
Katie Murphy was the winning pitcher for the Hawks.
In game two the Hawks lost a tough contest to Forest City by the score of 3-1 in an international tie breaker.
Forest City scored a pair of runs in the extra frame while the Hawks were held scoreless.
In their last game of the day the Hawks defeated Clear Lake 9-1 with Murphy having a dominating performance on the mound for the first five innings.
Laurynn Lammers tossed the final two innings for the Hawks.
With their 2-1 record at the Charles City Tournament the Hawks now stand at 5-2 overall.
This week they will host Independence on Wednesday evening on Sill Field for a WaMaC Conference double header.
On Friday and Saturday they will play in the Jesup Tournament. On Friday the Hawks will play Decorah at 10:45 a.m. before taking on Wapsie Valley at 2:15 p.m.
On Saturday the Hawks will face North Fayette at 9:00 a.m. before taking on Dubuque Hempstead at 10:45 a.m. |
