Hawks bang nine home runs in four wins last week, now 18-2

The West Delaware boy’s baseball team picked up four big wins last week to up their season record to 18-2.

For the week the Hawks kept the long ball going as they banged out nine home runs during the week to bring their season total to 39.

Justin Gideon led the way with 4 long balls, BJ Hermsen had 3 while Nate Lahr and Nathan King each belted one home run.

On Monday night the Hawks entertained the Vikings of Vinton Shellsburg for a WaMaC Conference double header on Exide Field.

In game on the Hawks Mitch Mormann held the Vikings in check, tossing a three hitter as West Delaware won by a score of 4-2.

Vinton got on the board first with two runs in the top of the third inning. They collected two of their four hits in the game in that third inning.

The Hawks answered the Viking scores with a pair of runs of their own to knot the score at 2-2.

Ryan Hauser led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on Chris Harbaugh’s sacrifice ground out.

Lucas Kafer then moved Hauser to third with a sacrifice ground out to second. Hauser scored when the Vinton third baseman mishandled Zach McCool’s ground ball.

BJ Hermsen followed with an RBI single before Nate Lahr struck out to end the inning.

Justin Gideon smashed a two out two-run home run in the home half of the fourth inning to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead.

Mormann set the Vikings down in order in the fifth and sixth before giving way to Justin Gideon in the seventh.

Gideon struck out three of the four batters he faced to secure the 4-2 win for the Hawks.

Garrett Linderwell had two hits for the Hawks while Lucas Kafer, Zach McCool, BJ Hermsen, Nate Lahr and Justin Gideon each had one hit for the Hawks.

Game two was a much different story for the Hawks.

They got the bats going in the home half of the first inning and never let up as they posted a 13-0 shut out win.

The game was actually called due to bad weather with the Hawks batting in the bottom of the third, leading 13-0 with two runs in and runners on first and second with none out.

West Delaware put seven runs up in the bottom of the first, six coming on three home runs.

BJ Hermsen blasted a two run shot, Nate Lahr followed with a solo dinger and Justin Gideon banged a three run home run to give the Hawks the early 7-0 lead.

West Delaware put four more runs on the board in the home half of the second. A two-run double by Garrett Linderwell and Justin Gideon’s second home run of the game, a two- run blast put the Hawks up 11-0.

The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the third. Chris Harbaugh led off with a double, Lucas Kafer followed with a RBI double. Clarke Butler, running for Kafer scored on an error by the Viking first baseman for run number 13.

It was then that the rain hit. The game was called shortly thereafter due to the torrential down pour.

The Hawks banged out 10 hits in the two plus innings.

Justin Gideon, Nate Lahr, BJ Hermsen and Zach McCool all had two hits each.

Lucas Kafer and Garrett Linderwell had one hit each.

On Tuesday night the Hawks traveled to Waterloo West for a non-conference JV/varsity double header with the WaHawks.

In the varsity contest the Hawks scored five first inning runs as they coasted to the 12-2 six inning victory.

The Hawks needed just three hits to score the five first inning runs as they were aided by a pair of Waterloo West errors.

Those five runs would be all the run support that winning pitcher, Garrett Linderwell would need.

Garrett tossed all six innings allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking four.

BJ Hermsen swatted a solo home run in the top of the second for a 6-0 Hawk lead.

West scored their only tow runs in the bottom of the second.

The Hawks added four runs in the fifth on two hits and two West errors.

West Delaware scored their final two runs on a two-run shot by Justin Gideon, his fourth in the last three games, to give the Hawks their final margin of victory, 12-2.

On Wednesday night the Hawks traveled to Denver for a JV/varsity non-conference double header.
The Hawks banged out 16 hits off of Titan pitching to win 14-4 in six innings.

BJ Hermsen smacked a two-run home run for the Hawks in the top of the first for a 2-0 West Delaware lead.

Denver scored a lone run in the bottom of the first to cut the Hawk lead to 2-1.

Zach McCool’s two run single in the second upped the Hawk lead to 4-1.

McCool had an RBI single in the Hawk half of the fourth to give West Delaware a 5-1 lead.

The Hawks then broke the game open in the top of the fifth as they exploded for six runs to up the lead to 11-1.

Nathan King knocked in the first run of the inning for the Hawks as he hit a solo home run with one out.

Chris Harbaugh had an RBI double, Lucas Kafer a two-run single and Zach McCool a run scoring double for the Hawks in the big fifth inning.

Denver got a solo home run in the home half of the fifth to keep the game from ending early.

The Hawks plated three more runs in the top of the sixth to up their lead to 14-2.

The Titans scored to runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 14-4 in favor of the Hawks.

Chris Harbaugh picked up the pitching win, working six and a third innings. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out seven and walked just two batters.

Lucas Kafer got the final two outs of the game, getting the first on a fielders choice and the second on a pop out to the catcher.

Getting hits for the Hawks were Zach McCool 3, Chris Harbaugh 2, BJ Hermsen 2, Clarke Butler 2, Lucas Kafer 1, Nate Lahr, Nathan King 1, Mitch Mormann 1, Garrett Linderwell 1, Justin Gideon 1 and Brad McDonald 1.

The Hawks will have a busy week this week with a conference double header at Western Dubuque last night (Monday), a make up double header at Dyersville Beckman on Tuesday (tonight). On Wednesday night the Hawks will travel to Decorah for a JV/varsity double header before returning home on Thursday evening for a conference double header with Benton Community. On Saturday the Hawks will be in Keokuk for a pair of non-conference games.

West Delaware girls improve to 22-4 with four wins

As was the case around most of eastern Iowa last week the weather played havoc with getting games played.

The West Delaware girls did manage to get five games in, winning all five.

They did have their second game at Vinton rained out on Monday night after having the first game called due to weather in the sixth inning.

In that first game the Hawks were leading 5-0 when the game was called so the score went back to the end of the fifth with West Delaware ahead 2-0.

Sara Hermsen and Ashley Hood each had run scoring hits for the Hawks in the 2-0 win.

Katie Murphy tossed a one hitter while striking out eight Vinton batters.

The postponed game two will be made up this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Vinton.

On Wednesday night the Hawks hosted the Blazers of Dyersville Beckman for an important WaMaC Conference double header on Sill Field.

The Blazers came into the nights action with a fine 13-4 record while the Hawks sported a fine 18-4 season record.

Beckman dominated the first four innings, building a 3-0 lead off of Hawk ace hurler Katie Murphy.

Aided by numerous Blazer errors and some key hits the Hawks rallied from down three to win by a final score of 7-3.

Lindsey McDowell led the Hawks with two hits in four trips to the plate. Murphy helped her own cause with a two-run single in the Hawks big fifth inning come back.

For the game Murphy struck out five while allowing seven hits and just one earned run.

In game two the Hawks had the bats going early as they pounded out a dozen hits to defeat the Blazers 6-1.

Katlyn Heiserman led the way with a three for three performance at the plate. She got offensive help from Lindsey McDowell and Ashley Hood each with two hits. Haleigh Klein swatted her first career varsity home run to drive in a pair of runs for the Hawks.

Katie Murphy struck out five and scattered three hits before giving way to Jenna Hermsen for the final two innings.

On Friday and Saturday the Hawks traveled to Ames where they were to play four games in the Ames Pinch Hitters Classic.

Games one and two against Ankeny and top ranked in Class 3A Harlan were rained out on Friday.

On Saturday the Hawks managed to get both games in, the first against North Scott and the second against Pella.

In the game with North Scott the game went to the International Tiebreaker after being tied at 5-5 through seven innings with the Hawks winning by a final score of 6-5.

The Hawks had defeated North Scott twice earlier in the season on Sill Field.

This time the Lancers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as they touched Katie Murphy for five hits in the inning.

Murphy settled in and gave up just three more hits over the next seven innings.

With the Hawks trailing 5-2 heading into the top of the seventh they rallied for three runs to tie the game at 5-5.

The Lancers misplayed a ground ball by Haleigh Klein that allowed two runs to score, sending it to the International Tiebreaker.

Ashley Hood was four for five with an RBI and sister Jenny Hood was two for four to lead the Hawks offensively.

North Scott, in their first game on Saturday had defeated number on ranked in Class 3A, Harlan 4-0.
The Hawks second game on Saturday was against the Little Dutch of Pella.

West Delaware topped Pella 4-1 to record their 22nd win of the season.

Kayla Vaske, Ashley Hood, Lindsey McDowell and Kayla Bries all had two hits apiece for the victorious Hawks.

Katie Murphy pitched the first four innings striking out six and allowing just four hits. Jenna Hermsen tossed the final three innings striking out six while giving up two hits and one earned run.

The Hawks will have a busy week this week with seven games on the schedule.

On Monday night (last night) they hosted the Bobcats of Western Dubuque for a WaMaC Conference double header.

Wednesday night they travel to Benton Community before heading off to Colesburg for a pair of non-conference games with the Vikings of Ed-Co on Thursday evening.

Saturday they will have their make up game with Vinton, in Vinton starting at 10:00 a.m.
