The West Delaware Hawk girls basketball team hosted the Bobcats of Western Dubuque last Friday night in Manchester and came away with a thrilling 51-48 victory.
The Hawks who have struggled from the free throw line thus far made 15 of 21 charity tosses against the Bobcats.
None of those were bigger than the two that junior Ashley Hood made with just 3.7 seconds left in the game to give the Hawks their final margin of victory.
With the Hawks leading 49-48 with less than 10 seconds remaining the Bobcats fouled Hood. She stepped to the line a calmly knocked down both free throws for her only two points of the night.

Katie Wessels scored the first six points of the second half to give the Hawks a seven point lead, 28-21 early in the third quarter.

Western Dubuque cut the Hawk lead to just four points, 35-31 on a Molly Link three-point goal with 13 seconds left in the quarter. Emily Heffernen countered for the Hawks with a basket to up the West Delaware lead to 37-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Following a pair of Emily Heffernen free throws with 42 seconds left to give the Hawks a four point cushion, 47-43, the Bobcats Molly Link hit her fifth three-point basket of the game to cut the Hawk lead to a single point with 34 second left.
Katie Wessels made two huge free throws with 25 seconds left to put the Hawks back up by three points.
Western Dubuque countered with a basket by Molly Steffens with 11 seconds left to make the score 49-48 setting up Ashley Hoods two game securing free throws.

On Saturday the Hawks competed at the always very tough Jerry Eckenrod Bobcat Invitational at Benton Community.
With five ranked teams and a bunch of ranked individuals the tournament once again proved to be a very good one.
In the end the Don’s of Don Bosco had too much fire power for the rest of the field as they racked up 229.5 points to run away with the team title.
The Dons placed 12 wrestlers in the top six spots, claiming five individual champions.
The only other team to place 12 wrestlers in the top six spots was the West Delaware Hawks.
The Hawks had a pair of champions in Zach McCool at 140 pounds and Paul Broghammer at 285 pounds.
McCool had a first round bye. In his quarterfinals match he posted a 22-7 technical fall over his opponent from Williamsburg. In the semi-finals he won by fall over his opponent from Don Bosco before posting a 17-3 major decision over Tyler Weeds of Belle Plaine in the finals.
Paul Broghammer also received a first round bye. In his quarterfinals match he defeated his opponent from Davenport Assumption 12-0 before pinning his opponent from Independence in the semi-finals. In his finals match he faced off against Andrew Bush of Davenport Assumption who entered the tournament as the undefeated top seed. Paul dominated Bush throughout the match and won via pin with just five seconds left in the match for his first varsity tournament championship.
