Hawks sweep Wildcats in annual battle

Saturday night a huge crowd gathered in the West Delaware gym for the annual West Delaware, Maquoketa Valley girl boy double header.
The non-conference game is one where you can usually throw out the records and just play the game for the natural rivalry that it is.
The Hawks got the best of the Wildcats on this night with the West Delaware girls starting things off with a 56-49 victory in the girls game. The West Delaware boys then capped off the evening with a 43-26 win over the Cats.
The Hawk sophomore teams also won their games that got under way at around 2:30 on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Emily Heffernen scored a game high 15 points for the Hawk girls with half of them coming in a two minute and 50 second stretch of the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats Blake Funke scored five straight points for the Wildcats to cut a seven point West Delaware lead, 43-35, to just two points at 42-40.

With the Wildcat defense sagging on West Delaware post, Katie Wessels the Hawks used the extra pass to find Heffernen open on four straight possessions.
With Heffernen’s fourth straight basket the Hawks had put the lead back to seven points at 50-43.
Jodi Gibbs canned a long three point shot for the Wildcats to cut the Hawk lead to four points with 1:08 left in the game. The Hawks then connected on five straight free throws, three by Ashley Hood and two by Jenny Hood to put the game away.
The Hawks had raced out to an early 7-2 lead and led 12-8 late in the first quarter. The Wildcats Sarah Stelken drained a three-point shot with 33 seconds left to leave the Hawks with just a one point lead, 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The entire second quarter was a back and forth affair with the lead changing hands four times.
Blake Funke’s free throw with 48 seconds left before half time knotted the score at 27-27. Neither team would score before the half time buzzer, leaving the two teams in the same position as when the opening tip off was contested. |

The two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter and with the score tied at 33-33 the Hawks Ashley Hood hit a three-point goal that gave the Hawks a 36-33 lead, one they would not give up.
Emily Heffernen scored a pair of close range goals at the end of the quarter to give the Hawks a five point lead, 40-35 heading into the final eight minutes of action.
As has been the case for most of the season the Hawks had a very balanced scoring attack. Emily Heffernen led the way with 15 points, Katie Wessels scored 13 and Ashley Hood tossed in 10 to give the Hawks three double figure scorers.
Jenny Hood and Sam Conrad tallied 9 and 8 points respectively. Kayla Bries had one point to round out the Hawk scoring.

The West Delaware boys capped off a four game sweep for the Hawks in the nights final game with a 43-26 win over the Wildcats.
The Hawks took control of the game from the opening tip off with junior BJ Hermsen making his first two shots, one from two point range and the second from behind the arc to give the Hawks an early 5-0 lead.
Back to back baskets by Matt Rolfes and Chris Crawford upped the Hawks lead to 9-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter.
Hermsen scored the final four points of the first quarter for the Hawks to stake West Delaware to a 13-5 lead.
Both teams scored eight points in the second quarter leaving the Hawks leading by eight points, 21-13 at the half.
During the second quarter the Hawks managed just one field goal, a two point basket by BJ Hermsen on the Hawks first possession of the quarter. The final six points of the quarter all came from the free throw line with Hermsen, Chris Crawford and Austin Cole each making two charity tosses each.
Senior Jeremy Dircks had four points in the quarter for the Wildcats on a three point goal and a free throw. The Cats other four points of the quarter came on a basket by Adam Koopmann and one free throw each by Aaron Jay and Brian Wolf.
The Hawks stretched their lead from eight points at the half to 14 by the end of the third quarter even though Hawk leading scorer BJ Hermsen did not score.
Austin Cole and Phil Keppler picked up the slack with four points each during the period.
With the Hawks holding a 37-22 lead the crowd was treated to a pair of dunks by BJ Hermsen on back to back possessions. The pair of slams gave the Hawks their largest lead at 41-22.
For the game Hermsen led all scorers with 19 points, the only Hawk to hit double figures.
Austin Cole had 8 points, Chris Crawford and Matt Rolfes 6 each. Phil Keppler rounded out the Hawk scoring with 4 points.
Adam Koopmann and Aaron Jay led the Wildcats in scoring with 8 and 7 points respectively. |

McCool claims Jefferson Invitational title

The West Delaware wrestling team enjoyed another very successful week on the matt last week.
The Hawks traveled to DeWitt for a double dual with the host Sabers and the Vikings of Vinton Shellsburg on Thursday night.
The Hawks started off the meet against Vinton where they totally dominated the Vikings, 52-15.
The Hawks lost just two matches to the Vikings. |

Each team gave the other six points via forfeits, the Hawks at 103 pounds and the Vikings at 171 pounds.
The Hawks recorded five falls on the night with Adam Rave, Zach Boss, Carl Broghammer, Steven Broghammer and Paul Broghammer all winning via pin.
The Hawks picked up 12 points with decision wins by Nathan Vaske (3-1), Brett Yonkovic (4-2), Chris Ketchum (2-0) and Chris Harbaugh (4-3). Zach McCool rounded out the Hawk scoring with a 16-4 major decision at 140 pounds.
The two matches that the Hawks lost were at 125 (Pat Soppe) and 135 (Nick Ketchum).
Even though the score was lop sided against the Vikings the four regular decision wins were by no more than two points.
The Hawks second dual of the night came against one of the early WaMaC Conference favorites, the host Sabers of DeWitt Central.
The Sabers are predominately an upper class dominated team with 11 of their 14 wrestlers being juniors or seniors.
The match started at 145 pounds where the Hawks Chris Harbaugh got the Hawks on the board first with a 3-1 decision. Adam Rave (152) and Zach Boss (160) followed with decision wins, 6-2 and 7-5 to put the Hawks up 9-0.
Tyler Manternach lost a tough 3-0 decision to the Sabers Jeremie Hahn to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Hawks.
From 189 to 285 the three Broghammer brothers, Carl (189), Steven (215) and Paul (285) all picked up wins to give the Hawks a big 22-3 lead after the first 7 matches.
Carl posted a 5-2 win, Steven won by fall and Paul recorded a 9-0 major decision.
With the Hawk forfeit at 103 the score went to 22-9.
Nathan Vaske (112) recorded a big 14-6 major decision to a 26-9 lead.
The Sabers cut into the Hawk lead at the next two weights, 119 and 125 as they picked up a decision and a technical fall to pull to within nine points at 26-17.
Chris Ketchum (130) won an 8-2 decision before the Sabers won a major decision at 135 to make the score 29-21 in favor of West Delaware.
The final match of the meet was between a pair of ranked 140 pounders, Zach McCool for the Hawks who is ranked first in Class 3A and Dylan Azinger who is ranked fourth in Class 2A at 140 pounds.
McCool showed why is the topped ranked 140 pounder as he dominated Azinger from the opening whistle to win by a score of 6-1.
With McCool decision the Hawks posted a 32-21 victory to keep them with just one loss in the WaMaC Conference while winning five duals.
On Saturday the Hawks traveled to Cedar Rapids to compete in one of the toughest tournaments any where in the state, the Cedar Rapids Jefferson Invitational.
There would be some 40 ranked wrestlers in the field along with some of the states best Class 3A teams in Bettendorf and Waverly Shell Rock.
At the end of a long day of extremely tough competition the Hawks came home with a fourth place overall finish and one champion.
Zach McCool kept his record perfect as he posted three wins during the tournament in claiming the championship at 140-pounds.
McCool defeated Shonichiro Uno of Bettendorf in the quarter-finals and Keaton Lunn of Fort Dodge in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match.
In the finals it took Zach just 20-seconds to dispose of Charles Tims of Waterloo East.
The Hawks had one other wrestler advance to the finals, that was 189-pound sophomore Carl Broghammer.
Carl had a very good tournament by advancing to his first tournament championship match. On his way to the finals he defeated Onazi Agbese of Waterloo East in the quarter-finals before disposing of William Lackey of Davenport West in the semi-finals.
In his finals match Carl lost a very hard fought decision to last years Jefferson Invitational 189-pound champion, Anthony Lasosso of Bettendorf.
Brothers Steven and Carl both won their final matches of the day to take third place at 215 and 285 pounds respectively.
Steven defeated 16-1 Alex Schweredtfeger of Bettendorf for third place while Paul won a 1-0 over Trey Pendelton of Waterloo East for his third place finish.
Other placewinners for the Hawks were Nathan Vaske at 112-pounds who finished fourth in what was probably the toughest b racket in the tournament. The top four ranked wrestlers and the 8th ranked wrestler were all in the field.
Chris Harbaugh at 145 won his first two matches to get into the semi-finals where he lost to the top seeded Tanner Kampen of Humbolt before losing to Khyle Cos of Waverly Shell Rock to come home with a fourth place finish. Chris’ two wins came against Nick Powell of Clinton and Austin Fields of Davenport West.
Adam Rave, 152-pounds also won his first two matches of the day. He defeated Shawn McGinniss of Dubuque Hempstead in the first round and McKinze Jackson of Davenport Central in the quarterfinals to advance to semis.
In the semi-finals Adam lost to eventual champion Matt Kuster of Boone before falling in the third fourth place match to Reed Kahler of Waverly Shell Rock.
At 171 pounds the Hawks Tyler Manternach advanced to the quarterfinals with a first round bye.
He then defeated Tyler Wingerson of Fort Dodge in the quarters to get into the semi finals. in the semis Tyler lost to top seeded Byron Tate of Clinton before falling to Josh Deere of Bettendorf in his third, fourth place match.
Waverly Shell Rock ran away with the team title, scoring 251.5 points.
Bettendorf was second with 175.5 points, Fort Dodge third with 152 points and the Hawks fourth scoring 139 team points. |
