Hawks end dual season at 16-4, prepare for districts on February 17th
by Ken Boesenberg
|
The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team wrapped up their dual meet season last week with a WaMaC Conference dual at Western Dubuque on Thursday night before hosting the West Delaware Duals on Saturday.
The Hawks and the Bobcats had an epic battle on Thursday night in Epworth.
With three regulars out of the line up for the meet the Hawks would need to have some big matches out of the remaining starters.
In the end the two teams ended up in a 33-33 tie with the meet being decided on criteria.
Each team won seven matches, each team had four pins (forfeits count as pins for criteria), there were no technical falls and no major decisions. With neither team being declared the winner through the first four criteria it was on to number five, most first match points scored for the meet. It was here that the tie was broken and the Hawks given the win as they scored 17 first match points to just 6 for Western Dubuque.
That criteria measures the aggressiveness of the team and rewards them for being the aggressor.
The meet started at 140 pounds where top ranked Zach McCool gave the Hawks a 6-0 lead with a third period pin.
Western Dubuque evened the score at 6-6 when the Hawks forfeited at 145 due to an injury to senior Chris Harbaugh.
Aaron Chapman, filling in for an ailing Adam Rave at 152 had the dubious honor of facing highly ranked Noah Southworth who had moved up from 145. |

The Hawks Zach McCool records career pin number 100 during the Hawks dual win over Iowa Falls at the West Delaware Dual Tournament in Manchester last Saturday afternoon.

West Delaware freshman Pat Soppe has his opponent from Western Dubuque in trouble. Pat won a big 10-5 decision as the Hawks defeated the Bobcats 34-33 last Thursday night in Epworth. |
Aaron did a fine job before losing via fall to Southworth.
Tyler Manternach dropped down a weight from his usual 171 pounds and picked up a big 5-0 win at 160 to cut the Bobcat lead to 12-9.
Sophomore Nick Ronnebaum moved into the 171 pound slot and fought hard before losing by fall.
The Hawks lost a close 2-1 decision at 189 with Carl Broghammer as the Bobcats upped their lead to 21-9.
The next two Broghammers on the mat for the Hawks righted the ship with a pair of pins to knot the score at 21-21.
After forfeiting at 103 the Hawks Nathan Vaske stepped on the mat and took care of business, winning by fall to again tie the score, this time at 27-27.
Freshman Brett Yonkovic had a tough match and fought hard before losing a 7-5 decision to put the Bobcats up by three points, 30-27.
In an important match at 125, West Delaware freshman Pat Soppe picked up a huge 10-5 decision to keep the Hawks in the meet.
Another freshman, Chris Ketchum gave the Hawks a 33-30 lead with a fine 7-2 decision at 130 pounds.
Western Dubuque was able to tie the meet at 33-33 with a win at 135, 8-4.
Then came the 20-minute wait for the final outcome to be decided by criteria with the Hawks finally being awarded the victory, 34-33.
The win was number 8 of the WaMaC Conference Dual season, giving the Hawks second place in the conference with an 8-0 record.
On Saturday the Hawks hosted their West Delaware Hawk Duals.
Participating teams were Crestwood, Marion, Iowa Falls and West Delaware; Clayton Ridge ended up not coming.
The Hawks got just two duals in on the day. They defeated Iowa Falls 63-15 and were defeated by dual champion Crestwood 31-27.
The day was a monumental one for West Delaware senior wrestler Zach McCool. Zach picked up his 100th career pin when in his match with Iowa Falls.
McCool is the first wrestler in West Delaware school history to record 100 career pins. He also holds the record for pins in a season with 33.
The Hawks will begin preparation over the next two weeks for their upcoming district meet at Cedar Falls on Saturday, February 17th.
The district will be loaded with a number of ranked teams and wrestlers.
Teams at the Cedar Falls district are, Cedar Falls, Charles City, Mason City, Oelwein, Waterloo East, Waterloo West, Waverly Shell Rock and West Delaware.
