WD girls end tournament hopes in Marion
by Ken Boesenberg |
After posting an opening round 62-48 win over the Bobcats of Western Dubuque on Thursday night the West Delaware girls basketball team had to travel to Marion for a third meeting with the Indians in a Regional Semi-Final Saturday night.
It seems that no matter what the sport, it is just hard to beat the same team three times in the same year.
That was the case on Saturday night as the Hawks, who owned two wins over the Indians in WaMaC Conference play fell at Marion, 61-55.
The Hawks got a season high 20 points from junior forward, Emily Heffernen but could not hold on to a five point half time lead.
Jenny Hood’s three ball gave the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. Heffernen hit back to back baskets late in the first quarter to give the Hawks a four point lead, 9-5.

After a very slow start to the second quarter where Marion was able to extend their lead to 18-11 Jenny Hood nailed her second three ball of the first half to cut the deficit to four points, 18-14.
The Indians Sam Rinehart scored on a short jumper o give Marion a six point lead, 20-14 with 3:50 left in the first half.
That would be the last points for the Indians in the first half as the Hawks went on an 11-0 run to close the quarter and take a 25-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
Emily Heffernen scored five straight points in a 40-second span as the Hawks raced back. Ashley Hood completed the 11-0 run with a driving lay-up with 15 seconds to go to give West Delaware the five point lead at the half.
Marion came out on fire in the second half as they started the third quarter with a 14-4 spurt to go up by five points, 34-29 with 3:46 left in the third quarter.
The Hawks battled back to trail by just three points, 39-36 at the end of the third period.
During the final eight minutes of the game when the Hawks would close the gap on the Indians, Marion would respond.
In the end 13 of Marion’s 22 fourth quarter points would come from the foul line as the Hawks were force to foul.
