The West Delaware girls basketball team was busy this past week, dropping games to Beckman and DeWitt, and getting a strong victory over Oelwein on Saturday.

Beating the bad Tuesday weather, the Hawks took on Beckman on Monday in Manchester and took a tough mark in the loss column, 50-31.

It was head-to-head in the first eight minutes, with the score sitting at an even 9-9 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

The Beckman defense stepped things up in the second and only allowed six Hawks points while scoring 13 themselves. The Blazers went to the locker room with a seven point lead, 22-15.

The third quarter started off slow, with only one point being scored in the first two minutes by either team. A Beckman free throw rounded out the opening minutes.

Picking things up a bit, the Hawks scored ten points in the third, but Beckman put up twelve to increase their lead, 34-25.

A big fourth wrapped up the Beckman victory. The Blazers scored 14 fourth quarter points with the Hawks only answering with six.

DeWitt traveled to town on Friday and handed the girls their second loss of the week.

Things started off looking good for the Hawks, holding the Sabers scoreless for the first three minutes of the game. But DeWitt picked it up after that and made up for those three minutes, holding a 14-7 lead over the Hawks at the end of the first quarter.

Chipping away at the Sabers lead, the Hawks came within three of DeWitt before they slipped away and increased their lead to eight at the half, 24-16.

After scoring five points in the first minute of the third quarter, the Hawks cooled off and added only five more in the remaining seven minutes. The Sabers added nine third quarter points and concluded the third with just a five point lead over the Hawks, 33-28.

West Delaware opened the first minute of the final quarter with a basket and didn’t add another point until they were down to the last two minutes of the game. DeWitt had taken a 42-32 lead with one minute remaining, and even though the Hawks scored eight points in the last minute, the Sabers had already attained a big enough lead to clinch the victory and handed the Hawks a 48-40 loss.

Sabers defenders were all over Emily Heffernen, which sent her to the free throw line 15 times, making 11 of 15 opportunities for a 73 percent free throw percentage. The team shot 61 percent, making 19 of 31 at the line.

Heffernen was high scorer, recording 19 points.

After the two tough losses, the Huskies of Oelwein came to town on Saturday and the Hawks were out for blood, and got it.

The Hawks took a quick 5-2 lead over the Huskies before they pulled away and set the Hawks trailing 9-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawk defense was strong in the first half of the second quarter, allowing only a single Husky free throw, while putting up seven on their side of the scoreboard.

The teams stayed even for the last three minutes, answering basket for basket until the Hawks one-upped the Huskies and took a 24-22 lead at the break.

A high scoring third proved to be just what the Hawks needed to increase their lead. They came well-rested out of the locker room and posted 17 points in the third quarter. Oelwein recorded 12 of their own, but still trailed 41-34 starting the final quarter.
