West Delaware girls get outdoor season started with Hawk Early Bird
by Ken Boesenberg

The Bobcats of Benton Community literally ran away with the West Delaware Girls Track Early Bird Invitational team title last Tuesday night in Manchester.

The Bobcats scored 122.6 points, easily outdistancing runner-up North Linn by 55 points.
The host Hawks scored 61 points to finish in fourth place, one point behind third place finisher Oelwein.

The weather played a huge factor as far as times were concerned.

Such is usually the case for early outdoor meets in Iowa.

Freshman, Alyssa Koloc competes in the 100-meter dash for the Hawks at the West Delaware Early Bird Invitational last Tuesday night in Manchester.

When the meet started it was in the mid to upper 60’s with a light breeze, by the time the last race was run the temperature had dropped dramatically and the wind was howling out ot the northeast.
The Hawks, despite finishing fourth did have some very good performances.

The shuttle hurdle team of Robbie Sedain, Emily Havertape, JoAnn Feldman and Cristen Dudak took first in a time of 1:08.12.

Robbie Sedain captured first in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:11.98. Sedain also teamed up with Becca Gibbs, Cristen Dudak and Emily Havertape to capture first in the 4 x 200-meter relay with a time of 1:53.44.

West Delaware boys track team opens season at Washington Relays
by Ken Boesenberg
The West Delaware boys track team made the 100 mile trip to Washington last Thursday afternoon to compete in the Washington Relays.
The rain held off but a strong wind made for some tough running from turn to right on through turn three.

Coach Tom King’s young Hawk squad did a nice job competing in the Class B, scoring 62.5 points on the night.

The 62.5 points put them in fifth place of the six Class B teams.

This year the Iowa High School Athletic Association has added a new race to the boys track schedule, the shuttle hurdle relay.

The Hawks Destry Sperfslage (right) hands the baton to Tom Gaffney (left) during the running of the 4 x 200-meter relay at the Washington Demon Relays last Thursday night in Washington.
That is a race that has been around for a long time for the girls, one in which the Hawks have been very good at over the past 10 years.

The boys shuttle is contested over 110-meters by each of four relay members. Hurdles are set at their lowest point, which is something that will more than likely be changed in the next year or two.

The Hawks took first in their first ever shuttle competition with a time of 1:04.82.

Making up the team were Tom Gaffney, Adam Rave, Jake Wall and Chris Harbaugh. Rave and Harbaugh are the only two experienced hurdlers on the team, both compete in the 110-meter highs at the meet, placing fifth and third respectively.
