Hawk girls sweep through Oelwein Quad meet

After pounding on each other for the past several weeks in the confines of their own gym it was time for the West Delaware Hawk volleyball team to face some outside competition.

The Hawks Katie Wessels (#3) and Nicole Neverman (#16) go up for a block against Starmont during action at the Oelwein Quad Meet last Thursday night in Oelwein. The Hawks defeated the Stars 21-16 and 21-11. West Delaware junior, Emily Heffernen (#15) blocks the kill attempt by Emily Coffman of Independence. The Hawks defeated the Mustangs 21-6, 21-6 as they started the season out with three straight wins in Oelwein.
The competition in the practice room is intense and on a very high scale and it shows when the Hawks start facing opposing teams.

On Thursday night the Hawks got the 2006-07 season underway at the Oelwein Quad Meet.

West Delaware’s first match of the season was against WaMaC Conference foe Independence.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in game one as they cruised to a 21-6 victory. Game two saw the Hawks get out to another early lead, 10-3 before also winning by a final score of 21-6.

Coach Brett Mather rotated all 13 players through the line up against the Mustangs with no noticeable fall off in ability or intensity.

The Hawks second match of the night was against the host Huskies.

Again the Hawks got out to early leads in both games against Oelwein, 9-1 in game one and 10-2 in game two as they went on to defeat Oelwein, 21-9 and 21-13.

Senior Katie Wessels scored 10 offensive points for the Hawks with eight kills and two ace serves.

Her ace serves came on a very impressive “jump serve”, something that Katie has added for her senior season.

The Hawks third and final match of the night came against a very scrappy Starmont Star squad.

The Hawks were not quite as sharp against the Stars but took care of business, winning by scores of 21-16 and 21-11.

Lindsey McDowell, Katie Wessels, Emily Heffernen and Tessa Reinig combined for 21 kills in the two games against the Stars.

The Hawks competed at the Vinton Invite on Saturday and will have a busy week this week with matches at Western Dubuque on Tuesday, at home vs. Independence on Thursday and at the Applington Parkersburg Invite on Saturday, September 9th.
