47-0 HAWKS HEADED TO STATE
by Ken Boesenberg
Oelwein or Grundy Center it didn’t matter to the West Delaware volleyball team. They just wanted to get on the court and get to work, and get to work they did.

They came right out of the shoot last Monday night against the Cubs of Nevada in totally dominating fashion.

The Hawks dominated the front row defensively, were nearly flawless on serve receive and had six different players record kills offensively.
In the end the Hawks were more than Nevada could handle as they swept the Cubs three games to none by scores of 25-5, 25-5 and 25-12.

The three game sweep upped the Hawks overall game record to 107-3 and their match record to a perfect 47-0.

That 47-0 mark makes them the only undefeated team left in the state, regardless of class.

Coach Brett Mather was pleased with the way his Hawks performed.

“We came right out in game one and took them out of their game. We were able to do the same thing in games two and three as well,” commented Mather.

“This team has accomplished all of their goals so far this season with the WaMaC title, the Westside title and now the Regional Championship. Now we just need to work on getting better and preparing hard for our first round opponent (Western Dubuque) in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday,” concluded Coach Mather.

The Hawks will will face WaMaC Conference opponent Western Dubuque on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

The Hawks own a victory over the Bobcats earlier this season (September 5th), three games to none (25-21, 25-20, 25-17).

That was the only time that the Hawks and the Bobcats crossed paths during the season.

Besides West Delaware and Western Dubuque three other WaMaC Conference teams will be playing at the State Volleyball Tournament.

Fifth rated Marion, also in Class 3A as well as Dyersville Beckman and Waterloo Columbus in Class 2A.

Besides the various tournament wins for the Hawks this season, just to go unbeaten in the WaMaC Conference against four state bound opponents shows the strength of the Hawks schedule and the outstanding strength of the conference itself.

Winners of Wednesday evening first round games in Class 3A will play again on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in a semi-final match.

Those winners will then compete for the Class 3A State Championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Class 3A upper bracket - Western Dubuque (22-11) vs. West Delaware (47-0); Marion (38-11) vs. Winterset (36-7); lower bracket - Pella (35-7) vs. Dubuque Wahlert (30-6), Spencer (34-3) vs. Sioux City Heelan (45-8).

Vikings advance with 34-22 win
by Ken Boesenberg

There is an old saying “the third times a charm” and that was the case with the Ed-Co Viking football team last Wednesday night.

The Vikings were making their third appearance in the football play-offs and had lost first round games in their first two appearances.

Not the case on Wednesday night as the Vikings used a swarming defense while riding the legs of Colton Rhines and the arm of quarterback Ryan Putz to their first ever play-off victory.

Colton Rhines scores one of his three rushing touchdowns for the Vikings against Lake Mills.

The 34-22 win over Lake Mills and fans and players celebrating on the field long after the game was over.

As district champs the Vikings should have hosted a first round game but the two teams were more than 150 miles apart, setting up a possibility of being in the UNI Dome.

At left, The Vikings Andy Oldfather nearly made it to the end zone on this play late in the game with Lake Mills. Oldfather rushed for 42 yards on nine carries during the Vikings 34-22 win last Wednesday night in Waverly. At right, Ed-Co’s Brian Daker just gets a hand on this ball to deflect a pass intended for a Lake Mills receiver during the second quarter of action. Daker played solid defense for the Vikings while catching 3 passes for 59 yards in the 34-22 win.

However, in Class 3A Clear Lake and Mt. Vernon were four miles farther apart so they went to the Dome putting the Vikings in Waverly at Wartburg College.

It probably wouldn’t have made any difference, artificial turf, ground up rubber or natural grass the Vikings were on a mission, and mission accomplished.

Colton Rhines rushed for 150 yards on 33 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Vikings.

Andy Oldfather also had a good night of rushing the ball as he rushed for 42 yards on 9 carries.

Senior quarterback, Ryan Putz enjoyed on of his more successful nights this season throwing the ball. Putz completed 10 of 13 passes for 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Putz’s first touchdown pass came with 2:15 left in the first quarter when he connected with tyler McDowell down the left sidelines for 37yards.

The Vikings broke the game open during the second quarter when they scored two more times to take a 22-8 lead at the half.

Colton Rhines scored from two yards out with 11;02 left; Putz tossed his second TD pass of the game to McDowell, this time from 15 yards out.

Colton Rhines 1-yard run with 4:01 left in the third, gave the Vikings a 28-8 lead.

Lake Mills came back to within six points, 28-22 late in the third quarter.

The Vikings ate up the clock during the fourth quarter and put the game away on a 2 yard TD run by Colton Rhines with 3:1- left in the game.

The Vikings forced five Lake Mills fumbles and recovered three of them while turning the ball over just once themselves.

The Vikings were bitten by the penalty bug as they were flagged 10 times for 90 yards.

The Vikings faced St. Ansgar last night (Monday) in the UNI Dome, a victory would advance them to the semi-finals, also in the Dome on Saturday, November 11 at either 4:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.

From the OOOP’s Department
In last weeks Press we ran a salute for the Ed-Co Viking football team making it to the 2006 Play-offs. As many of you saw the information was incorrect for the Vikings record.

What happened was that since the Vikings had qualified early for the play-offs I made two pages for their salute, one with a 7-2 runner up flag and one with an 8-1 district champ flag. We sent the wrong one and did not realize it until too late on Tuesday morning.

The proper picture is on this week’s Neighbors page.

My apologies to the Ed-Co fans and supporters. KEN.
