Keppler signs with Hawkeyes

West Delaware senior Phil Keppler (center) signs his National Letter of Intent to play baseball for the University of Iowa last week in the West Delaware library. Phil is flanked by his parents, Steve and Gloria. Also viewing the signing were Phil’s grandparents (left to right) Don and Darlene Olberding and Jerry Keppler. Phil is a very versatile player for the Hawks, playing either left or right field when he is not on the mound. Phil is a career .464 hitter for the Hawks with 122 hits in 263 at bats. He has 8 career home runs and 75 runs batted in. He is known for putting the ball in play, having struck out only six times in those 263 plate appearances. On the mound he has a career record of 17-2 with an earned run average of 1.86. He has allowed just 28 earned runs in 105 and two thirds innings while striking out 121 batters and walking 44. Last season Phil was 9-0 for the Hawks with 71 strike outs and an earned run average of 1.33.
