West Delaware boys, girls qualify for state track

Last Friday night in weather conditions that were nothing short of ugly eight boys and girls track teams gathered in Marion for their Class 3A District track meet.
On the line was a chance to run in the 2006 State Track Meet this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Des Moines.
The athletes battled wind and rain for most of the evening making it not much fun for participants or spectators.
In the end the both the West Delaware Hawk boys and girls teams ended the meet with a very good number of athletes moving on to the state meet.
For the boys West Delaware qualified in six events. |
Brad McDonald had a good night as he qualified in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and as part of the 4 x 200-meter relay team.
Senior Chris Green ran his best 800-meters of the season, 2:04.03 to make it to state.
Chris Harbaugh qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 15.64.
Matt Monaghan ran his best ever 3200-meters, 10:15.13 to advance to state.

McDonald’s time of 11.09 in the 100-meter dash was the 14th fastest; his time of 22.74 in the 200-meter dash gave him the 10th fastest time in Class 3A. The Class 3A top seed in the 100-meter dash is Grayline Ross of Marion with a time of 10.73 while Cody Baethke of Williamsburg is the top seed in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.13.
Chris Green will be seeded 11th in the 800-meter run with his qualifying time of 2:04.03. The top seed in the 800-meter run is Matt Neberman of Central Clinton in a time of 2:01.75.
Matt Monaghan’s time of 10:15.13 in the 3200-meter run has him seeded fourth in Class 3A. The top seed is Anthony Oberle of Bishop Heelan in a time of 10:08.48. The number two, three and four seeds all came from the Marion district meet.
Chris Harbaugh will be seeded 19th in the 110-meter hurdles with the number on seed being Alex Spielman of Storm Lake in a time of 14.34.
The Hawks 4 x 200-meter relay team will be the fourth seed with their time of 1:32.02. Dubuque Wahlert, the district champion will be the top seeded team with a time of 1:30.08.
The West Delaware girls qualified seven events for the state meet.
Individually the Hawks qualified JoAnn Feldman in the 100-meter hurdles, Heather Heffernen in the long jump and the tandem of Cristen Dudak and Robbie Sedain in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Hawks will be sending four relay teams - shuttle hurdle (Robbie Sedain, Katlyn Heiserman, JoAnn Feldman, Cristen Dudak); 4 x 100-meter relay team (JoAnn Feldman, Robbie Sedain, Emily Prinsen, Cristen Dudak); 4 x 200-meter relay team (Emily Prinsen, Robbie Sedain, Tess Reining, Cristen Dudak) and the Distance Medley relay team (Emily Prinsen, Tess Reining, Holly Tjaden, Heather Heffernen).
Here is how the West Delaware girls qualifiers stack up against the field in for the Class 3A State Track Meet.
JoAnn Feldman is the 7th seed in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 15.15, the top seed is Lindsey Bolt of Mt. Pleasant in a time of 14.09.
Heather Heffernen will be the 16th seed in the long jump with a leap of 16’ 1”, the top seed is Jennie Clark of Norwalk with a leap of 17’ 9 3/4”.
In the 400-meter hurdles the Hawks Cristen Dudak is the 5th seed at 1:08.08 while teammate Robbie Sedain is the 8th seed with a time of 1:09.27. The top seed is Lindsey Bolt of Mt. Pleasant with a time of 1:04.56.
The shuttle hurdle team is the number two seed with a time of 1:05.42, just behind state leader Mt. Pleasant with a time of 1:02.96.
The 4 x 100-meter relay team has the 8th fastest time at 51,76 with the top team being Denison at 49.96.
In the 4 x 200-meter relay the Hawks are seeded 5th with a time of 1:48.44. The top qualifier is Mt. Pleasant in a time of 1:46.93.
The Hawks Distance Medley relay team is the 12th seed at 4:26.46 with Fairfield leading the way in a time of 4:16.68.
The action gets underway at Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Thursday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m. with the running of the Class 1A and 4A girls shuttle hurdle relay events.
Action will continue right through to Saturday afternoon.
The morning sessions will belong to classes 1A and 4A while the afternoon sessions will hold Class 2A and 3A competitions.

Hawks edge out #3 Decorah for Sectional title

If you thought the weather was ugly for track competition on Friday night you should have been on the golf course Friday morning and early afternoon trying to compete in a Sectional Golf Meet at the Manchester Golf Club.
With conditions that were not really fit for man nor beast eight teams battled for the right to move on to district golf meet competition.
In the end it was truly the survival of the fittest on the links and on this day it was the Hawks of West Delaware that emerged as Sectional Champions by virtue of a fifth man tie-breaker.
Both West Delaware and the third rated in Class 3A Vikings of Decorah finished the meet deadlocked at 343 strokes each. |
The Hawks Chris Crawford carded a 91 to be the Hawks fifth scorer while Brett Duffy carded a 92 for Decorahs fifth scorer, giving the Hawks the Sectional title.
There was also a tie for the third place between Oelwein and Western Dubuque at 349 strokes.
The Huskies fifth score of 95 edged out the Bobcats fifth score of 100, sending the Huskies on to District competition this Friday at Gardner Golf Course in Marion.
The Hawks were led by Eric Crawford with an 84. Ben Cole and Jake Zebuhr each fired rounds of 86 while Austin Cole carded an 87 for the Hawks team total of 343.

Also playing were Chris Crawford (91) and Kyle Morris (93).
The District Golf Meet field at Gardner Golf Course on Friday will have the following teams looking to advance to the State Golf Meet in Decorah; Independence, Anamosa, Marion, Oelwein, Decorah and West Delaware.

Wildcat girls do well at District Meet in Monticello

The Maquoketa Valley Wildcat girls track team had a good District Track Meet on Saturday in Monticello.
The weather conditions were not the best but were much better than those that existed on Friday night.
The Wildcats Blake Funke and Callie Krapfl ran very good races in the 3000-meters with both making it to the State Track Meet.
Blake covered the 3000-meters in a time of 11:26.84 which will give her the 9th seed in Class 2A. Teammate Callie Krapfl ran a 11:39.73 which will seed her 16th in Des Moines.
A pair of other individuals also had good efforts at the meet. Kendra Kregel had a leap of 16’ 3 1/2 inches in the long jump to seed her 6th in the event at state. Teammate Jodi Gibbs had a best jump of 15’ 7 3/4 inches to give her the 21st spot in Class 2A.
The Wildcat shuttle hurdle relay team of Lindsay Hunt, Mekell Helle, Melissa Nurre and Amy Whitman ran a very good time of 1:08.90 to give them the 22nd spot in the race at state.

The top seeds in the events that the Wildcats will be running in Des Moines are as follows - 3000-meter run, Mallory Marshall of Center Point Urbana, 10:52.95; shuttle hurdle relay, Battle Creek Ida Grove, 1:05.20; long jump, Dani Stipe of Carroll Kuemper, 18’ 0”.
The Wildcats boys also competed on Saturday at the District Meet, they did not however qualify anyone for the State Track Meet this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Des Moines.
