Although the West Delaware Hawk wrestling team took an earlier exit from the Class 2A State Dual Team Tournament than they wanted to they still wrote themselves into the record books.

They finished the season with an 18-2 dual meet mark, only three teams have ever done better.

Their only losses of the year in dual meets came at the hands of Iowa City West (winners of the State title in Des Moines and also winners of the Class 3A State Dual Team Meet this past week end in Cedar Rapids) and Osage (the Class 2A State Dual Meet Champions).

The 1988-89 squad was 10-1-2 under coach Larry Atwater; the 1990-91 squad led by coach Scott Litterer was 21-0 and Litterer’s 1994-95 team posted at 21-1-1 overall record.

In 2000-01 the Hawks were 20-2 under coach Jeff Voss.

On Saturday the Hawks needed to wrestle one of their better duals in order to get past opening round opponent Osage. The Hawks battled and battled but came up just short as they lost by a final score of 38-26.

Picking up wins for the Hawks were Zach McCool at 130 with a -1 decision over Theran Goodale; Adam Rave at 135 with a come from behind 8-7 decision over Josh Johanns.

Rave was 7-5 late in the third period when he turned Johanns to his back during the final 15-seconds to score three near fall points to pick up the win.

Dustin Jaeger at 152 won his match by technical fall over Andy Johnson while Tony Marbach at 189 needed just 2:28 to pin Nick Hirota.

Steven Broghammer at 215 posted a 6-4 win over Alex Gileson with a reversal in the final five seconds of regulation. At 103 Nathan Vaske was the Hawks sixth winner of the dual with a pin just 13-seconds into his match with Brett Castek.

If it was any consolation for the Hawks in their loss to Osage; Osage went on to win the Class 2A Dual Team Meet title by downing top seeded Spirit Lake Park 39-31 in the semi-finals and Columbus Junction 30-27 in the finals.

Spirit Lake Park defeated Emmetsburg 41-28 in the third/fourth place match.

This years team was relatively young with just three seniors in the starting line up; Dustin Jaeger (152), Jamie Vaske (171) and Tony Marbach at 189. Those seniors led by example all year long, compiling a combined 94-28 record.

Five juniors, three sophomores and three freshman rounded out the 14 man varsity line up.

That group of 11 starters along with a talented junior varsity group will have the Hawk wrestling team doing what they do most every year - reloading for 2006-07.

The Hawks took first in five tournaments during the season, winning at Starmont, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, the West Delaware Duals, the Sectional Tournament at Independence and the District Tournament at Upper Iowa University.

They placed second at the West Delaware Hawk Invitational and at the WaMaC Conference Tournament. They were third at the Benton Community Invitational and placed fifth overall at the Cedar Rapids Extravaganza.

In those tournaments the Hawks crowned 21 individual champions.

West Delaware boys just one game from STATE

The West Delaware boys basketball team claimed a District title with two big tournament wins, moving them into the Sub-State final tonight (Tuesday) against Cresco on the campus of Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

The Hawks topped Western Dubuque, 51-36 on Monday, Feb. 27 in their district opener before defeating Independence 50-40 last Thursday night for the district title.

Western Dubuque got the first basket of the second period to pull to within two points, 10-8. It was then that the Hawks outscored the Bobcats 10-4 over the final six and a half minutes of the quarter to take a 20-12 half time lead.

The 10-4 spurt was started by Chris Crawford’s three point basket with 6:15 left in the quarter. BJ Hermsen then scored on a short jumper followed by a three point bucket by Eric Crawford.

The pace of the game picked up considerably during the final eight minutes with the Hawks steadily increasing their lead while putting 24 points on the board.

Senior guard Eric Crawford scored the Hawks final six points of the game as West Delaware picked up the 15-point victory, 51-36 over the Bobcats.

Eric Crawford was the only other Hawk to score in double figures besides Hermsen’s 16 with 13 points.
