The West Delaware varsity boys basketball season came to an end with a 65-38 loss to Crestwood in a Class 3A Sub-state final contest, Monday night, March 6 in Fayette.

The Hawks had advanced to the Sub-state final by posting victories over a pair of WaMaC Conference opponents in District Tournament action.

They had defeated Western Dubuque 51-46 and Independence 50-40 to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Crestwood proved to be too quick for the Hawks in Fayette. Combine that quickness with a 10 for 25 effort from behind the three-point arc and you have a team that is going to be hard for a lot of teams to contend with.

A pair of seniors led the Hawks in scoring against the Cadets, Brett Manternach was the only Hawk to score in double figures with 16 points. Guard Eric Crawford tallied nine.

Crestwood set the tone for their three-point barrage by making three trey’s in the first quarter as they got out to an 18-11 lead.

The Hawks countered the Cadets outside game with senior center Brett Manternach scoring six of the Hawks 11 first quarter points from point blank range.

Crestwood banged in four more three point goals during the second quarter to take a 15-point lead, 35-20 at the half.

The Hawks had trouble scoring in the third quarter with their first points coming at the 3:10 mark on BJ Hermsen’s first basket of the game.

The Hawks were held to just four points through the first six and half minutes of the quarter as Crestwood raced out to a 27-point advantage, 51-24.

The Hawks Alex Boom and Eric Crawford scored just before the end of the third quarter to cut the Cadet lead to 23-points, 51-28.

Crestwood scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to lead by 30-points, 58-28 with five minutes remaining before winning by a final score of 65-38.

Rounding out the Hawk scoring against the Cadets were Chris Crawford 3, BJ Hermsen 4, Alex Boom 4, and Tony Brown 2.

The Hawks ended the season with a 14-10 overall record. They were 4-1 in non-conference games, 2-1 in tournament action and 8-8 in WaMaC Conference action.
