West Delaware girls climb to top of Class 3A polls

The West Delaware girls softball team got their first ever number one ranking in the Class 3A polls this week.
The Hawks started this weeks action with a 27-2 mark and ended the week with a Class 3A best of 32-3.

They saw their 29 game winning streak come to an end in a game one of a double header loss, 1-0, to Ed-Co last on Friday night in Manchester.
The Hawks bounced right back in the night cap to defeat the Vikings 5-2.
The week was full of seventh inning heroics for the Hawks as they won two games in their last at bat.
On Monday night they swept a double header from WaMaC Conference foe DeWitt Central 4-2, and 8-7.
In game one scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings to back Katie Murphy’s to hit pitching against the Sabers.
Sara Hermsen and Renee Boeckenstedt each had a pair of hits and an RBI each in the win.
Game two was a back and forth affair with the Hawks taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first only to see DeWitt counter with four runs to grab a 4-3 lead at the end of the first inning.
West Delaware regained the lead, 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Again DeWitt countered and went ahead 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Hawks added a single run in the top of the sixth to get within one run, 7-6.
Then in the top of the seventh Renee Bockenstedt led off with a sharp single to right. Lindsey McDowell followed with a huge 2 run home run to give the Hawks an 8-7 lead.
Katie Murphy shut down the Sabers in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the one run come from behind victory.
Lindsey McDowell and Kayla Bries each had three hits for the Hawks while Ashley hood and Emily Prinsen each went two for four in the win.
On Wednesday the Hawks hosted Waterloo Columbus for an important WaMaC Conference double header on Sill Field.
The Hawks swept the Sailors, 1-0 and 3-1 to run their conference record to 14-0.
In game one the game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Jenny Hood laced a one out single. Pinch runner Alison Klein came into to score the winning run on a two out single to right field by Kayla Bries.
In game two the Hawks Ashley Hood scored two of the three Hawk runs as she had three hits and a stolen base to lead the Hawks to a 3-1 win.
Also getting hits were Sara Hermsen, two for three, and Jenny Hood, two for three.
On Thursday night the Hawks hosted the the Vikings of Ed-Co where the two teams split a non-conference double header. Ed-Co won game one 1-0 with an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
The Vikings started the rally with a double by Tiffany Kruse. She later scored after moving to third on a Hawk error and scoring on a fielders choice.
Katie Murphy took the loss with a outstanding pitching performance. She struck out 15 Viking batters and gave up just two hits.
In the game the Hawks stranded seven runners in scoring position in four innings.
Game two the Hawks got back on the winning track with a 5-2 win over the visiting Vikings.
Katlyn Heiserman had two hits in four at bats and scored three of the Hawks runs to lead West Delaware.
Megan Rolfes was the winning pitcher as she tossed six strong innings with relief help from Katie Murphy in the seventh inning. |
Hawk boys run off five straight now 29-2

The West Delaware boys baseball team continued their winning ways last week as the rattled off five straight wins to improve to 29-2.
The Hawks got the week started with a 11-2, 2-0 WaMaC Conference double header sweep of DeWitt Central in DeWitt.

In game one the Hawks scored early and often with two runs in the first and four more in the second and third innings.
Brad McDonald and BJ Hermsen led the Hawks offensively. McDonald was two for four with two runs driven in while Hermsen was two for four with three runs batted in.
Garrett Linderwell’s bat came alive the Hawks as he had a pair of hits including an RBI double.
Zach McCool picked up the win by going six innings, giving up two runs on just two hits while striking out 11 Saber batters.
In game two the Hawks got a third inning RBI double by Phil Keppler and two out solo home run from BJ Hermsen in the top of the seventh to defeat the Sabers 2-0.
The Hawks had 10 hits in game two but stranded 10 runners.
Phil Keppler tossed six innings ot pick up the win. He gave up just three hits while striking out nine Saber batters.
BJ Hermsen shut the door on DeWitt in the seventh.
On Wednesday night the Hawks faced an always tough Decorah Viking squad in Manchester.
The Hawks came out swinging the bats and were able to post a 10-0 win over the Vikings.
The Hawks swatted three home runs in the contest, a three run blast in the first inning by BJ Hermsen and back-to-back solo home runs by Phil Keppler and Zach McCool in the third inning as the Hawks raced out to a 5-0 lead.
Hermsen’s RBI double in the fifth gave the Hawks a 6-0 lead.
In the sixth inning West Delaware ended the game with a four run outburst.
Garrett Linderwell was the winning pitcher as he allowed no runs on just three hits while striking out nine Decorah Viking batters.
Thursday saw the Hawks travel to Waterloo Columbus for a must win WaMaC double header against the Sailors.
And win they did, game one in a ho hum fashion, 12-0 and game two in a come from behind fashion 10-5 in eight innings.
Game one saw the Hawks put up runs early and often.
BJ Hermsen got West Delaware on the board in the first with an RBI single. In the third inning Zach McCool’s single and Justin Gideons double gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks added four more runs in the fourth on a walk to Alex Ryan, a double by Garrett Linderwell and two out hits by Zach McCool and Justin Gideon for a 7-0 lead.
The Hawks ended the game early in the fifth when Phil Keppler jacked a three run home run with two out and BJ Hermsen blasted a two run double.
Hermsen was the winning pitcher for the Hawks as
he gave up no runs on three hits while striking out four batters.
In game two the Sailors made it very interesting
before West Delaware prevailed, 10-5, in eight innings.
After the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on hits by Nate Lahr and Jamie Vaske the Sailors scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Columbus tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings to go up by a score of 5-1.
The Hawks then rallied back with three runs in the fifth. Brad McDonald walked, Zach McCool followed with a two out double. Walks to BJ Hermsen and Justin Gideon followed by a single by Nate Lahr got the Hawks back to with in one run, 5-4.
Jamie Vaske’s one-out single in the seventh inning tied the game at 5-5.
In the eighth inning the Hawks broke the game open with five huge runs.
Garrett Linderwell reached on a Sailor error, Phil Keppler double with one out. Zach McCool followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Columbus decided to not let BJ Hermsen beat them so he was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Big mistake. Justin Gideon stepped to the plate and delivered his second grand slam home run of the season to give the Hawks a 10-5 lead, and the victory.
The Hawks are still perched atop the Class 3A polls as they sport a very lofty 29-2 record as the season begins to wind down and the state tournament nears. |
