by Ken Boesenberg
|
The West Delaware girls softball team wrapped up the regular season with a 6-0 shutout win over the Go-Hawks of Waverly Shell Rock.
The win was the Hawks 44th of the season against just six defeats.
Megan Rolfes and Katie Murphy combined to toss a no-hitter at the Go-Hawks. Rolfes tossed the first four innings and Murphy the final three innings.
The Hawks followed that final regular season win up with a pair of wins to start the Class 3A State Tournament run.
On Wednesday night the Hawks defeated WaMaC Conference rival Maquoketa 2-0.
The two teams had split a conference double header just 10 days earlier.
The Hawks scored their first run of the game in the top of the first inning.
Ashley Hood reached on an error by the Cardinal second baseman and was sacrificed to second by Katlyn Heiserman. Emily Prinsen then moved Hood to third base with a sacrifice bunt.
Hood came into score on a wild pitch by the Cardinals Hailey Bicford to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
The Hawks second and final run of the game came in the top of the second inning.

The Hawks ended the regular season with a 44-6 record. |
Jenny Hood led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came into score on a passed ball.
The Hawks made the two runs stand up as they played error free ball behind pitchers Megan Rolfes and Katie Murphy.
Rolfes went the first four innings allowing no runs on four hits while striking out one Cardinal batter.
Murphy tossed the final three innings. She gave up one hit, struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.
The Hawks had seven hits on the night, two each by Jenny Hood and Kayla Bries. Sara Hermsen, Lindsay McDowell and Katie Wessels had the remaining three base hits.
The win over the Cardinals set up a game with Anamosa who had defeated DeWitt Central 4-3 on Wednesday night to advance to the District Championship game.
The Hawks posted a huge 11-0 win over the Raiders to move into the Regional Finals against Cedar Rapids Xaiver, in Manchester last night (Monday).
The Hawks took an early 3-0 lead in the top half of the second inning. Jenny Hood singled with one out and stole second. She scored when Kayla Bries banged a two-out double to score the Hawks first run. Ashley Hood followed with a single to score Bries, Hood eventually scored on an error by the Raider catcher.
The Hawks made the score 4-0 in the fourth when Kayla Bries reached on an error and came into score on Katlyn Heiserman’s two-out single.
The Hawks added three more runs in the fifth on just one hit to take a 7-0 lead.
A three-run seventh inning highlighted by a towering home run, that cleared the scoreboard in left field, by Katie Wessels gave the Hawks an 11-0 win.
Again it was the combined pitching efforts of senior Megan Rolfes and junior Katie Murphy that shut out the Raiders.
The pair combined for a no-hitter with only one Anamosa runner being able to advance past second base.
Rolfes struck out five Raider batters over her four innings of work while Murphy struck out four, walked one and hit one during her three innings on the mound.
The Hawks banged out 12 hits against the Raiders. Katlyn Heiserman had three, Lindsay McDowell and Katie Wessels each two hits, Ashley Hood, Emily Prinsen, Renee Bockenstedt and Jenny Hood each had one.
The winner of the Regional Final game will advance to the Class 3A State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge the week of July 31 to August 5.
