by Ken Boesenberg

At left, West Delaware junior second baseman Zach McCool puts a tag on a Western Dubuque Bobcat runner who was attempting to steal second during the late innings of the Hawks 2-0 first round district loss to the Bobcats. At right, West Delaware junior, outfielder/pitcher, Phil Keppler watches takes a pitch against Maquoketa. Phil just last week made an oral commitment to accept a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Iowa starting in 2008. Keppler is one of the Hawks leading pitchers, hitters and fielders and will be a huge part of the 2007 Hawk team. |
After completing the 2006 regular season baseball season with a school record 37 wins against just two losses the West Delaware Hawks were ousted from the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament by Western Dubuque, 2-0 last Friday night in Farley.
The Hawks had upped their record win season to 37 with a double header sweep of WaMaC Conference opponent Maquoketa, 10-0 and 5-0 last Monday night on Exide Field.
However, at tournament time everybody starts all over at 0-0 with an equal opportunity of fulfilling the early season aspirations of competing for a state title.
The Hawks and the Bobcats, undoubtedly the two best teams in Class 3A, District 6 got the unfortunate draw of facing each other in a district opener.
The game was touted as a pitchers dual with a pair of the best Class 3A hurlers in the state taking the mound in BJ Hermsen for West Delaware and Billy Schmitt for Western Dubuque.
The Bobcats used three first inning hits, a double and two singles to score the first run of the game and take a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks looked to draw even in the top of the second inning when Justin Gideon ended up on second base with one out following an error by the Bobcat center fielder.
Gideon was stranded at second following a fly and strike out by the next two Hawk batters.
Hermsen put down the Bobcats in order in the home half of the second without a ball leaving the infield.
Western Dubuque scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
A lead off single was followed by a pair of Hawk errors that made the score 2-0 in favor of the Bobcats.
In the top of the fourth inning the Hawks Phil Keppler led off with a double down the left field line but was able to advance to no farther than third before the inning was over.
BJ Hermsen pitched himself out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning after the first batter reached on a Hawk error and advanced to second on a passed ball.
He was sacrificed to third and was left stranded as Hermsen struck out the next two Bobcat batters swinging.
Neither team threatened in the fifth or sixth innings with just one batter from each team able to reach base.
The Hawks looked like they would get back in the game in the top of the seventh inning when BJ Hermsen led off and reached first after being hit by a pitch. The second batter of the inning, Justin Gideon drew a walk to give the Hawks a pair of runners with no outs.
Schmitt then retired the next three Hawk batters to send the Bobcats on to the District 6 Championship game on Monday night against the Mustangs of Independence.
For the game the Hawks managed just one hit, Kepplers fourth inning double off of winning pitcher Billy Schmitt.
The Bobcats were not much more successful off of Hawks pitcher BJ Hermsen. They had just four hits in the game, three in the first inning and one in the third inning.
The Hawk season ended at 37-3 while the Bobcats kept alive with a season mark of 25-12.

On Thursday afternoon the Hawks hosted the Panthers of Monticello of a non-conference double header.
The Hawks won game one 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kayla Bries reached on an error, Ashley Hood then reached on a throwing error that allowed Bries to score all the way from first. Back to back to back singles by Katlyn Heiserman, Emily Prinsen and Sara Hermsen plated the final Hawk run.
Megan Rolfes was the winning pitcher, striking out six, giving up three hits and walking just one batter.

On Friday afternoon the Hawks hosted Dubuque Hempstead for another non-conference double header on Sill Field.
The Hawks escaped in game one with a 3-2 win when Ashley Hood opened the inning with a single, Katlyn Heiserman followed with a single and Emily Prinsen walked to load the bases.
Hood scored on Renee Bockenstedt's fielders choice when she beat the Hempstead throw to the plate.
In game two the Hawks completed the double header sweep with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Mustangs.
West Delaware grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a run scoring double by Emily Prinsen, driving in Katlyn Heiserman who had singled.
The Hawks scored their second run of the game in the third inning when Emily Prinsen doubled and came into score on Lindsey McDowell’s single.
The Hawks added three more runs in the sixth inning.
Lindsey led off with her third home run of the season for a 3-0 lead. Jenny Hood then singled and Kayla Bries reached on an error. Ashley Hood singled to load the bases and Katlyn Heiserman singled to drive in the first run. Emily Prinsen then walked to drive in the Hawks final run in the 5-1 victory.
The winning pitcher was Katie Murphy, she allowed three hits while striking out nine Mustang batters.
The Hawks traveled to Waverly for a single varsity non-conference game with the Go-Hawks last night before opening Class 3A State Softball Tournament action on Wednesday night against Maquoketa in Manchester.
The winner of the Maquoketa vs. West Delaware game will play the winner of the Central DeWitt vs. Anamosa game on Saturday night, July 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in Manchester.
The winner of that contest will face whoever comes out of the upper side of the bracket which includes Vinton/Shellsburg, Marion, Benton Community and Cedar Rapids Xavier.
The Regional Final contest will also be held on Sill Field in Manchester on Monday night, July 24th. The winner of that contest will advance to the 2006 Girls State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge starting on August 1st. |
