Hawks post six wins, improve to 35-2

The West Delaware boys baseball team kept the ball roling last week as they picked up six more wins to run their season record to 35-2.

During the six game streak the Hawks outscored their opponents by a whopping 48 runs, 54-6.
The double header sweep of Indpendence on Monday night, 9-2 and 8-0 gave the Hawks the overall WaMaC Conference title with just two conference games remaining against Maquoketa on Monday, July 10.
A pair of wins against the Cardinals and the Hawks will add the East Division title to this years list of accomplishments.
The 35 wins thus far this season ties the 2006 team for the most wins in a season with the teams from 2000 and 2005.
It is the most ever regular season wins by any West Delaware team.
“We have had an exceptional year. At this point though it is one game at a time. We have to focus only on our next game,” commented Head Coach Mike Morrison.
Morrison is happy with his Hawks performance both in the field and at the plate.
“Our pitching and defense have been outstanding all year long. Our hitting is getting better, top to bottom,” concluded Morrison.
In the 9-2 game one win over Indee the Hawks had 10 hits to back the two hit, eight strike out pitching of Zach McCool.
Zach McCool helped his own cause with three hits while Phil Keppler, BJ Hermsen and Alex Ryan each had two hits for the Hawks in game one.
In game two Garrett Linderwell tossed a three hit, 11 strike out gem against the Mustangs as the Hawks won 8-0.
Phil Keppler led the offensive charge with two hits and five RBI’s including a three run home run in the fourth inning.
Nate Lahr blasted a solo home run for the Hawks to lead off the second inning.
On Wednesday afternoon the Hawks traveled to Cascade for a non-conference double header with the Cougars.
Starting pitcher BJ Hermsen allowed just one hit in game one as the Hawks defeated Cascade 8-0.
Hermsen struck out 11 and walked just one Cascade batter.
The Hawks scored two runs in the first and four in the second before adding lone runs in the fifth on a Jamie Vaske home run and the sixth on and RBI double by Hermsen.
Phil Keppler had two hits and two runs batted in for the Hawks while Brad McDonald, Zach McCool, Justin Gideon and Garrett Linderwell each had one hit.
In game two Phil Keppler took the mound for the Hawks and held the Cougars to two runs on four hits while striking out 10 and walking just one to earn a 7-2 victory.
Again the Hawks got off to a fast start with two runs in the first inning.
Brad McDonald and Phil Keppler got things roling with back-to-back doubles to start the game with each coming into score.
BJ Hermsen cracked a three-run home run for the Hawks in the top of the third inning to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
Nate Lahr accounted for the Hawks final two runs of the game with a two run home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Brad McDonald led the Hawks with three hits while Phil Keppler, BJ Hermsen and Justin Gideon each had two hits.
Also getting hits for West Delaware were Zach McCool, Jamie Vaske and Alex Ryan.
On Thursday afternoon the Hawks made the long trip to Waukon for a non-conference double header against the Indians.
The Hawks scored early and often in game one as they won 12-1 in five innings.
Justin Gideon and Nate Lahr combined to drive in seven of the Hawks 12 runs, Gideon with a three run home run in the fifth and Lahr with an RBI single in the first and a two RBI double in the second.
Justin Gideon tossed the first inning for the Hawks before Jamie Vaske came on in relief to go the final four innings. They allowed just six hits.
In game two the Hawks again came out on fire as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.
BJ Hermsen drove in five of the Hawks first six runs with a two run double in the first inning and a long three run home run in the second.
Justin Gideon added a two run double in the Hawks fourth inning as the Hawks upped their lead to 10-0.
Waukon managed a lone run in the fifth as the Hawks cruised to a 10-1 victory.
Mitch Mormann picked up the win, going the distance. He gave up seven hits while striking out nine and walking just three Indian batters.
Zach McCool, justin Gideon and Nate Lahr each had two hits for the Hawks. BJ Hermsen was three for three with his five runs batted in.
The Hawks faced Maquoketa last night (Monday) in Manchester to end the regular season.
They will start the tournament trail at Epworth against Western Dubuque at 7:00 p.m this Friday night.

Hawk girls improve to 17-1 in WaMaC

The West Delaware girls bats came alive as they played some long ball last week while posting a 6-2 record to up their season record to 39-5.

The Hawks smashed six home runs during the eight games last week.
Emily Prinsen and Lindsey McDowell each had home runs in the Hawks 11-1 game two victory over Dyersville Beckman last Wednesday night in Dyersville.
The Hawks banged out three more four-baggers in their opening round 13-3 win over Valley of Elgin in the Independence Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The three home runs were bask-to-back-to-back shots by Renee Bockenstedt, Lindsey McDowell and Jenny Hood during a seven run fourth inning for the Hawks.
Emily Prinsen had a two run home run in the top of the first during the Hawks 4-3 loss to New Hampton on Saturday in the semi-finals of the Independence Tournament.
Both of the Hawks losses during the week were by a single run and more the result of mental and physical errors than lack of hitting.
The Hawks started the week with a double header split at Independence, losing the first game 4-3 before taking game two, 5-3.
The first game was back and forth with the Hawks owning three leads during the game.
They led 1-0 in the second inning, 2-1 in the third and 3-2 in the fifth. Independence scored and unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up the victory.
In game two the Hawks scored three runs in the first and one each in the second and third innings to post a 5-3 victory over the Mustangs.
Megan Rolfes got the win as she allowed just six hits.
On Wednesday the Hawks traveled to Dyersville Beckman for a WaMaC double header with the Blazers.
The Hawks got on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs. They added two more in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win game one by a score of 6-1.
Katlyn Heiserman went 4 for 4 with two runs batted in while Emily Prinsen and Kayla Bries combined for five hits to lead the Hawks.
Katie Murphy picked up the win with a four hitter.
In game two the Hawks jumped out to an early lead on a two run home run by Emily Prinsen. They kept up the offensive pressure as they pounded out 14 hits.
Lindsey McDowell’s three run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted a five run outburst that gave the Hawks a 9-1 lead.
With the 11-1 win the Hawks became the WaMaC Conference champions, pushing their conference record to 17-1.
On Friday and Saturday the Hawks played in the Independence Tournament where the won three of four games to place third.
They started the tournament with a 13-3 win over Valley of Elgin.
The Hawks scored seven runs in the fourth inning on three straight home runs (Renee Bockenstedt, Lindsey McDowell, Jenny Hood) to coast to the 10 run victory.
Ashley Hood had three hits, Katlyn Heiserman two and Renee Bockenstedt three hits and three runs batted in for the Hawks.
Katie Murphy was the winning pitcher with Megan Rolfes tossing the final two innings in relief.
Next up the Hawks downed East Buchanan 7-0 to move into the semi finals.
The Hawks were led by Ashley Hood who was three for four and the 10 strike out pitching of Katie Murphy. Megan Rolfes again tossed the final two innings for the Hawks.
The Hawks faced New Hampton in the semi finals on Saturday were they lost a very close game, 4-3.
The Hawks got out to a 2-0 lead on a two run first inning home run by Emily Prinsen. Hew Hampton countered with a run in the bottom of the first to cut the Hawk lead to 2-1.
New Hampton added a run in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth to hand the Hawks only their fifth loss in 44 games.
In the battle for third place the Hawks faced Dubuque Wahlert, whom they defeated in the championship game of the Hawk Invitational earlier this season.
The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the first inning and made them stand up for a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles.
Ashley Hood and Katlyn Heiserman reached on Wahlert errors to start the inning. Emily Prinsen drove in Hood with a single and Sara Hermsen’s sacrifice plated Heiserman for the Hawks only two runs.
Megan Rolfes picked up the win as she tossed a three hitter and allowed just the one run in the fourth inning by Wahlert.
The Hawks had two players make the all-tournament team, pitchers Katie Murphy and Megan Rolfes.
The Hawks traveled to Maquoketa on Monday and will have home double headers with Monticello on Thursday and Dubuque Hempstead on Friday. Both of those home games will start at 3:00 p.m.

Wildcat softball action

The Maquoketa Valley Wildcat softball team played six games last week, winning one.
The Cats started the week with a double header against a very good Monticello Panther squad.
Monticello took both games of the double dip, 10-0 and 11-1.
Monticello used two big innings in their 10-0 win, as they scored four in the third and four in the sixth.
The Wildcats managed just three hits off of Panther pitching, one each by Blake Funke, Kendra Kregel and Kelli Kregel.

She gave up just five hits and walked nine, however the Cats committed nine errors in the field.
In game two the Cats scored the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead before Monticello countered with seven runs in the bottom of the second as they went on to defeat the Cats 11-1.
Hilary Yonkovic had the only hit for the Wildcats in game two.
On Friday and Saturday the Wildcats joined 15 other teams in the always tough Independence Tournament.
After losing a pair of games on Friday, 10-0 to Decorah and 10-4 to Benton Community the Cats bounced back on Saturday morning to defeat Wapsie Valley, 5-4 in eight innings.
The Cats lost their last game of the tournament, 9-0 to Valley of Elgin.
Against Decorah the Wildcats were shut out on a no-hitter by the Vikings pitcher.
The Cats second game of the tournament was against WaMaC Conference representative, Benton Community.
The Bobcats defeated the Cats 10-4 behind a nine run second inning.
Maquoketa Valley took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Benton tying the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
Then came the big nine run second for the Bobcats.
Maquoketa Valley scored a pair of runs in the second and a single run in the third.
Kelli Kregel led the Cats with two hits. Michelle Tumey, Blake Funke, Abby Jurgens, and Sam Strum each had one hit for the Wildcats.
In their first game on Saturday the Cats got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning only to see Wapsie Valley come back to grab a 4-1 lead heading into the sixth.
It was then, with two outs that the Cats scored three runs to knot the score at 4-4, eventually winning in the eighth inning, 5-4.
Michelle Tumey, Blake Funke and Hilary Yonkovic each had two hits in the victory.
Ariel Steenhoek, Abby Jurgens, Kelli Kregel and Kayla Krapfl each had one hit.
Ariel Steenhoek pitched the final two innings of the game to pick up the victory.
The Cats last game of the tournament was against Valley of Elgin where they lost 9-0.
The Cats managed four hits off of Valley pitching, one each by Ariel Steenhoek, Michelle Tumey, Abby Jurgens and Hilary Yonkovic. |
