Hawk girls top Indee, 56-53 in overtime thriller |
The West Delaware Hawk girls basketball team rebounded from a tough six point loss to Western Dubuque on Tuesday night to win a come from behind overtime thriller over Independence on Friday night.
The Hawks were playing without their leading rebounder and scorer, Katie Wessels who suffered a minor injury during the Maquoketa Valley contest.
Couple that with the fact that a pair of starters were on the bench for the overtime period and you get a great confidence building win for the Hawks over a very good Independence Mustang squad.
Senior Jackie Mullis and junior Jenny Hood led the Hawks in scoring against the Mustangs with 12 points each.
Hood scored seven of her 12 points in a 37-second stretch of the fourth quarter to bring the Hawks back to within a single point of the Mustangs.
Hood nailed a long three-point basket at the 1:47 mark to cut the Indee lead to five-points, 47-42. The next trip down the floor Hood fired up another three-point shot which hit nothing but net. She was fouled on the play and drained the free throw to pull the Hawks to within a single point, 47-46 with 1:10 left in the game.
The Mustangs tried to bring the ball in after Hood’s made free throw. The Hawks Sam Conrad stole the inbounds pass and made a jump shot from point blank range to give the Hawks their first lead of the game, 48-47, with 1:08 left. |

The Mustangs Lacee Bates made one of two free throws with 11seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 48-48 and send the game in to overtime.
During the overtime the Hawks took a 50-48 lead when Jenny Hood made two free throws at the 2:44 mark. Sister, Ashley Hood dropped in a pair of charity tosses just 20-seconds later to give the Hawks a three point lead, 52-49.
Ashley Hoods basket with 1:47 left upped the Hawks lead back to three points, 54-51.
Independence got a basket from Leah Buls to pull to within a point at 54-
53 with just over 30 seconds remaining.
The Hawks then kept control of the ball and forced the Mustangs into several wild shots. During the last six seconds Megan Wessels and Kathryn Heiar each connected on one of two free throws to give the Hawks a huge three point win, 56-53.
The Mustangs scored the games first four points of the game and held a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Late in the second quarter the Hawks Kathryn Heiar converted a three-point play to cut the Mustang lead to three points, 21-18. However, Indee’s Kelsey Coulter made back-to-back three point baskets to push the Mustang lead back to nine points, 27-18.
The Hawks Kadie Hutton hit a jump shot at the buzzer ending the first half, sending the Hawks into the locker room with a six point deficit, 27-21,
Both team struggled a bit during the third quarter with the Mustangs getting the better of the Hawks by three points to lead 38-29 by quarters end.
The Mustangs held 10-point leads on three different occasions during the fourth quarter, the last one at 45-35 with three minutes to go.
Over that final three minute stretch the Hawks outscored the Mustangs 13-4 to force the game into an overtime period.
The Hawks allowed the Mustangs only two field goals during the fourth quarter.

On Tuesday night the Hawks hosted Western Dubuque Bobcats and lost a hard fought WaMaC Conference tilt, 55-49.
The Hawks had rallied from an early seven point deficit in the fourth quarter to knot the game at 43-43 with two minutes remaining.
It was then that Western Dubuque made eight of eight free throws while the Hawks were able to score just one basket in five possessions.
The victory for the Bobcats came despite a season high 17 points from West Delaware senior guard Kathryn Heiar.
Sam Conrad, filling in for the injured Katie Wessels led the Hawks with 11 rebounds while tossing in eight points.
The Hawks held a slim one point lead, 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but trailed by five points, 30-25 at the half.
Neither team could find their shooting touch during the third quarter as the Bobcats outscored the Hawks 6-4 to take a nine point lead into the final eight minutes of action.
The Hawks season record stands at 9-9, 6-2 in the East Division of the WaMaC Conference. A win over visiting Maquoketa this Tuesday night will assure the Hawks of no worse that a tie for the WaMaC Conference title.

 The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team made a big comeback after stumbling a during the first round of the WaMaC Conference Tournament in Epworth on Saturday.
Eventual conference champs, Independence built what turned out to be an insurmountable first round lead as they edged out the Hawks 211-185.
Thirteen of the Hawks fourteen wrestlers placed in the top seven with five making it to the finals and three becoming conference champs.
The Hawks Nathan Vaske claimed his first WaMaC title with a huge 13-10 decision over number two ranked in Class 2A, Ryan Hill of Vinton Shellsburg. Vaske controlled the match from the opening whistle but had to scramble away from a possible pin during the third quarter to pick up the win. Earlier in the tournament Nathan had defeated Kurt Wolf of Western Dubuque, fourth ranked in Class 3A, 11-7 to advance to the finals against Hill.

The Hawks second champion of the tournament came at 130-pounds where Zach McCool pinned his way to his third straight WaMaC Conference title.
Zach started the day with first period pin of David Weaver of Vinton. In his second match he flattened Marion’s Alex Conway in just 19-seconds to advance to the championship match.

In the finals it took McCool just one minute and 13 seconds to pin Mitch Gansen of Western Dubuque. The three wins boosted McCool’s record to 24-2 on the season.
The Hawks third champion came at 152-pounds where senior Dustin Jaeger won an 11-0 major decision over Brady Hopkins of Independence.
Jaeger, the number one seed at 152 won his first match by technical fall, 18-0, over josh Breaden of Maquoketa. In his semi-final match he won by fall at 3:21 over Ryan Immerfall of Marion before dominating Hopkins in the finals.
Jaeger’s season record now stands at 25-2.
The Hawks other two finalists were Tony Marbach at 189 and Steven Broghammer at 215.
Both lost to very good wrestlers from Independence, Marbach 7-5 to Nick O’Loughlin (seeded number 1) and Broghammer to the Mustangs Ben Lehman, also the number one seed.
Tony had advanced to the finals on the strength of a pair of major decisions, 12-4 over Ryan Heitzman of Dyersville Beckman and 9-1 over Derrick Conway of Benton Community.
Stevens wins came by fall over Andrew Elsinger of Western Dubuque and a 3-1 decision over Woody Roberts of South Tama in the semi-finals.
Other place winners for the Hawks at the WaMaC Conference Tournament were: Jason Lux (119) sixth place; Nick Ketchum (125) sixth place; Adam Rave (135) fourth place; Chris Harbaugh (140) fifth place; Tyler Manternach (145) sixth place; Nate Lahr (160) fifth place; Jamie Vaske (171) seventh place; and Paul Broghammer (275) fourth place.

50 Years of HAWK Wrestling |
The members of the first Hawk wrestling team of 1955-56 were on the mat before the advent of computers and cell phones. Many as they were growing up were not familiar with indoor plumbing.
All those things that in today world we just take for granted.
Coach Wes Sterner came to Manchester High School back in 1955 after having been a two time state champion at East Waterloo High school and competing at Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa.

Sterners first season started with 19 wrestlers who competed in 11 weight classes (95, 102, 112, 120, 127, 133, 138, 145, 154, 165 and Hwt).
Early practices were held in a small room in the northwest corner of the old gym where they wrestled on gray 1” horse hair mats that were covered with a canvas tarp.
The Hawks had a 1-3 record in dual meets their first year. At their first district meet in Cedar Rapids they won seven of their 11 first round matches and went on to finish fifth as a team.
Original team members (with their first initials and last names) were: K. Hansen, R. Ungs, J. Nelson, W. DeKeyser, W. Skinner, L. Slater, S. Walston, R. Soppe, D. Becker, D. Hilby, J. Bennett, D. Joslyn, G. Barrett, R. Jordison, J. Burke, R. Koch, and H. Beam.
Coaching records for the Hawk program are as follows. Wes Sterner (55-58) 3-5; Wilbur Nead (58-78) 156-69-4; Greg Hutchinson (78-83) 29-21-1; Doug Greenlee (83-88) 29-31; Larry Atwater (88-90) 27-3-2; Scott Litterer (90-95) 98-18-1; Jeff Voss (95-present) 181-38-1.
The overall record stands at 523-185-9. There have been 10 WaMaC Conference Dual Titles, all coming in the past 16 years. There have been 14 WaMaC Team titles and 105 individual WaMaC Champions.
There have been 113 State Qualifiers and 50 State Placewinners over the past 50 years. |
